Saw my new thyroid doctor today

I finally met the thyroid doctor that I had picked out via the Best Docs site. I am most pleased with her. She spent 2 hours with me today going over my history, discussing options, etc. She ordered the adrenal and hormone tests and I will do that on Monday. We did not re-do the thyroid tests since I had two recent sets of labs for her to review. She prescribed 1/2 grain Armour and we will do the thyroid tests in 6 weeks.

She is an M.D. and an M.D.(H). The latter is for holistic medicine. An interesting side note is she is hypothyroid herself so has a vested interest in treatment.

So now for the part that I have been dreading all this time. Beginning medication and seeing if I have any adverse issues with it. For once I would just appreciate it going well with something and no struggles. What are my chances?

I forgot to add that my doctor feels my thyroid issues are the result of an iodine deficiency. Now to figure out how to treat that since as a gastric bypass patient I cannot do anything time released or anything that might cause gastric distress. She mentioned a product from www.optimox.com and it is enteric coated, what I am not sure of is if I will absorb enough of it to make any difference. So, I have some research to do.

Have your antibodies been checked? I saw in another post that she feels that thyroid disorders are iodine deficiencies... before I'd start worrying about how to increase your iodine absorption I'd want to know if you're dealing with an antibody issue.

Wonder if the low thyroid has to do with blood sugar?? Energy at the cellular level used for conversion and metabolism.... Hmmmmm did you have thyroid labs done before the surgery? I'm wondering if things were low before or started after...

Interesting. In research I've done, I ran across many places where

it said iodine deficiency used to be the major cause of thyroid

disease, but it stopped when salt became iodized, except for 3rd

world countries. But you aren't the first person I've read that

said iodine was a factor. Good thing is it can be set right by

getting the needed iodine. But, as you said, how to get it in you.

2 hrs of going over history. As my dad used to say : " wowzeeboo. "

Wow, really get to feel like it's been thorough, and time for the

doc to note what needs to be noted.

My pre-op TSH was 2.7. My glucose was running on the high side at that point in my life with Type II Diabetes and meds. My IDIOT endocrinologist did not see fit to check my thyroid except for once in 1991. My TSH started rising about a year ago, approximately one year post-op. My diet since surgery has been much less "salt" driven than my pre-op life was so the iodine possibility makes sense to me.

You know Sandy, I was thinking about that the other day... I used to put so much salt on my food it was like sugar. Interesting.

You know Sandy, I was thinking about that the other day... I used to put so much salt on my food it was like sugar. Interesting.

In research I've done, I ran across many places where it said iodine deficiency used to be the major cause of thyroid disease, but it stopped when salt became iodized, except for 3rd world countries. But you aren't the first person I've read that said iodine was a factor. Good thing is it can be set right by getting the needed iodine. But, as you said, how to get it in you. 2 hrs of going over history. As my dad used to say : "wowzeeboo."
