To a certain degree, yes, it's a matter of doctor opinion. But perhaps one should look at a doctor's credentials before following their opinions :-) Many of us weren't told about the LID, either. My endo is a perpetual Top Doc in New York City (a place with lots of top docs), yet when I asked him, he said not to bother with it. There isn't a lot of hard scientific evidence supporting the diet, mostly because there are no drug companies who stand to make money off it, and because, well, it's just not considered to be a big deal. I'm convinced that if I had done the LID before my first RAI treatment, I wouldn't have needed a second one. If you'd like to read more, see http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Thyca/message/17493 ... " LID - why bother? " The bottom line is, LID makes intuitive sense, it gives us a sense of control in our treatment, and it just isn't all that difficult to do.
