He should be encouraging her to do both not just for a number on the scale but for all the different benefits. Just my opinion. Now I've been busy in the bouncers section so have mostly skimmed and don't know the whole scoop on this thread - and I know NO ONE probably agrees, but the above statement - that's the way I see it too. That's why for years I flat out refused to exersice. I know I don't like it, I know I won't keep doing it, and I know that if my body get use to it and I stop - weight gain WILL occur. Now I did however always try to 'move more'. For a person 100 pounds over weight, who did nothing but sit and eat because the weight not only zapped energy but also hurt...just getting up and moving WAS exersice to me. Now once just moving about the house felt ok and normal - I started 'moving more' outside. Weeding, carrying in wood here and there - little stuff. Now - my 'moving more' has escalated to walking.
