Guest guest
Hi, I have been on 75 mg of Synthroid now for 6 months or more. My doctor said my levels are now within the " normal " range. My question is: I am still losing a ton of hair. My hairline in the front is receeding and my scalp is very red and itchy. Does anyone know of any home remedies or shampoos that might help? I have been to 2 dermatologists and they thought that it was related to thyroid until they did a blood test. Then they thought it was something like lichen planopilaris?!? I am desperate and not sure what to do next. Any input would be appreciated. heather
Guest guest
if you are just on synthroid it is possible this is due to you not getting enough of the other thyroid hormones (synthroid only treats t4 I believe and you may need a thyroid hormone supplement in addition to the one you are taking). Always always get a second, third, fourth or fifth opinion by docs at different hospitals or practices and see what they say. good luck, andrea excessive hairloss Hi, I have been on 75 mg of Synthroid now for 6 months or more. Guest guest
- do you have copies of your lab reports showing your tsh, freet3, and freet4? We can then help determine whether in fact these ranges are "normal". More importantly, how are you feeling? Guest guest
I wonder if the red and itchy might be an allergic response. Some people are allergic to the filler put in Synthroid. You might ask your doc to switch you to a similar brand name that uses a different filler. Red and itchy sounds like a reaction, not a hypo thing. jane > > Hi, > I have been on 75 mg of Synthroid now for 6 months or more. My doctor > said my levels are now within the " normal " range. My hairline in the front is > receeding >> and my scalp is very red and itchy. Then they thought it was something >> like lichen > planopilaris?!? From what I understand there is a treatment for lichen planopilaris.... do they know for sure that's what you have? And have they offered treatment for it? It could also be sebhorreic dermatitis (which I have).... and in my case nothing over the counter works, and expensive prescriptions only moderate it. The hairloss could be genetic, or could be related to your scalp issues. You should talk to your dermatitis and get some solid answers and see about treatment. I've had problems with both... and being optimally treated with thyroid hasn't made a difference.

Guest guest
On the thyca group, someone just posted about Niotin (sp?) products you can buy only at beauty shops. They are made for folks going through chemo. But it helps when we're going through hair loss due to hypo. They have different ones for whether you dye or bleach your hair or it's just natural. I haven't used it, but the posters said they can wash their hair and brush it with very few hairs coming out now. It's a treatment to do for 3 months. So, if your hairloss is a thyroid hormone level thing, and not a bacteria or such on your scalp, the Niotin stuff may help. I think it was spelled Niotin, if not, it's close to something like that. Hey, there's another idea, to contact a reputable hair salon in town, let them see what's going on, they may have seen it before, may be able to give suggestions of what's going on, and may have products that will ease it for u while drs decide what to do. (unless u already did that.) jane

Guest guest
I know what you mean Carol.... my levels were really horrible and my hair looked like straw... I noticed my hair growing back on my forehead area and was quite happy, then all of a sudden this past summer it shot out to my bra strap area... I just had it cut for the first time in about 6 months or so (I didn't need it before) and my split ends and what not only took 2 inches or so off. Yay!! Guest guest
Hi , It looks like everyone has given you great information... What was your diagnosis for being placed on Synthroid? I for one would be wanting to see a second set of lab tests...to confirm the levels: TSH, Free T4 and Free T3 as well as the Antibody tests. As someone mentioned, this redness of the skin is possibly a result of an allergic reation to something in the Synthroid tablet...for some of us its the " filler " (that which is used to glue the med together in the shape of a pill.) Have you been on other forms of Thryoid replacement therapy? such as Levoxyl or its generics? Are you on any other meds? Second, have you changed your shampoo and/or conditioner in the last year? body soap? Or has the town/city water treatment plant changed or increased the chlorination of the tap water in the last year or so? Have you changed anything in your daily routine in the last year? Moved? Changed hair dressers? Third, How are you taking your Synthroid? On an empty stomach one hour before breakfast? with just a sip of water and nothing else in that hour? Fourth, Are you taking vitamins? such as a high quality multi vitamin? a Super Complex B vitamin, Essential oils (omega 3's and 6's) extra oils and the b-complex are great for your insides as well as for the skin and hair folicles. Fifth, How do you eat? High protein? High carb? High veggie? High sugar? All of these things might be things to look at, to consider as possible causes of the scalp and hair issues..... Looking forward to seeing your answers. Gossimer > > Hi, > I have been on 75 mg of Synthroid now for 6 months or more. My doctor > said my levels are now within the " normal " range. I wonder if it might be a reaction to toxic mold stuff. The pink ring, wonder if it's iron in the water (or you don't wash the tub often enough ( : Synthroid - some sources will tell you what's important is to take it an hour before food, that's consistent across the board, and just so you take it the same way all the time - if 2 cups of coffee, then always 2 cups of coffee. jane > >I was placed on Synthroid because I had all the symptoms of > hypothyroid (moon face, hair loss, lethargic, cold hand etc.) even > though my TSH was like 1.5 or something. I'm sitting here scratching my head....what on earth would cause a pink ring????????? For my own peace of mind I would get a water sample tested ASAP...And the fact that your scalp problems started about the time that you moved there..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ???????What is in that water??????? This is really scarey!!!! MY ALARMS ARE SOUNDING OFF BIG TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!! Second, be sure that you get rid of as much sugar as you can from your food intake...and replace it with something of protein. I am an advocate of a high protein diet with veggies and fruits...nothing processed like white flour or chemicals like Splenda or Equal or Sacrine(sp?) or white sugar... And be sure to get your Vitamins and Essential oils and Vit C, E, and B-Complex....all these are needed by our bodies as we battle the imbalance of the Thryoid hormones. For some of us, once we are away from the filler that we are allergic to, it may take upwards of 12+ weeks for our bodies to totally flush the filler chemical out of our systems. Then a few more weeks for the repairs to begin to show through. ie new, healthy skin and baby hair sprouting up in places where it had been lost. ????You aren't drinking this water....?are you??????????Please tell my you filter the water through at least a charcoal filter before you drink or cook with it...??????????? Guest guest
We have that here at our house. Usually I notice it growing in the stagnant water that sometimes stays on the back of our shower on the soap rest... I don't think it's harmful but I know ours is caused by us not cleaning the shower enough . Ours is kind of a rust color but whipes off very easily with a towel. andrea Re: excessive hairloss Hi ,?You get a pink ring around the bathtub?????
