Guest guest
Hi Jane, The doctor called it Abductor spasm of the Larynx.I didn't have cancer of the Thyroid just a huge Thyroid.I haven't had it imaged yet but will get it done soon.He just stuck that tube down my nose and had a look. Was really frustrated cause he said it was due to stress didn't want to hear about the TT.The worst problem is that at times I can't breath and he's trying to tell me it's in my head. Kim -- [Norton AntiSpam] Re: Total Thyroidectomy Trouble swallowing usually has to do with the laryngeal nerve damaged during TT surgery. People are put in physical therapy to learn to swallow. There are some operations/procedures tried, to get the nerve workable again. Breathing - have you had it imaged ? I wonder if tissue has grown back and squeezing your throat. Mine was just starting to squeeze my esophagus, plenty of room, but doc said it's sensitive and even a small reduction in the esophagus's size made it think it wasn't moving enough air, I had breathlessness. Was your thyroid removed because of cancer ? If so, I wonder if the breathing problem might indicate cancer spread to the lungs. Breathing - did docs look into if you started any new meds and the breathing might be an allergic reaction symptom ? jane us>> Hi about 4yrs ago I had my Thyroid removed.Ever since I have still > have trouble swallowing food and even saliva.I now am having trouble > breathing and was told it is because of Abductor spasm of the Larynz. > The specialist said it is caused by stress but after checking it out > on the net it seems quite common after a total thyroidectomy.I was > just wondering if anyone else had had this problem and what if any > thing was done about it.> > When I was 5 it was discovered I had a goitre and it grew ever since, > the Doctors where always amazed how big it was.(30yrs is a lot of > growing)I am wondering if it was left there too long and it has > stretched all the muscles and vocal cords?> > If anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated.> > Thanks Kim

Guest guest
Did you have RAI to kill off remaining thyroid tissue left after the TT? My understanding is that thy tissue left behind can grow. Got to wonder if that's happened. I may be wrong though. The reference may have been that thyca can regrow. Especially you having been kept so hypo, signals from pituitary go to it and it grows, as I understand. The can't breathe, was doc implying it's hyperventilation, like when you need to breathe into a bag to calm down and get the breathing back to normal ? Did he have an explanation for not breathing other than saying it's not thyroid related ? jane > > Hi Jane, > The doctor called it Abductor spasm of the Larynx.I didn't have cancer of > the Thyroid just a huge Thyroid.I haven't had it imaged yet but will get it > done soon.He just stuck that tube down my nose and had a look. Was really > frustrated cause he said it was due to stress didn't want to hear about the > TT.The worst problem is that at times I can't breath and he's trying to tell > me it's in my head. > > Kim
