Guest guest
Hi Karyn, Welcome to our group. The people here are wonderful and very knowledgeable. My son Austin was born on 7/8/02 with unilateral Rt club foot and Mettarasus Adductus(MA) in his left foot. We just went into shoes last week. I know the store we went didn't have the shoe size he needed, but they found them at another store for us and had them shipped directly to our house. Perhaps you can contact Markel and see if there is another retailer near you who may have them. We emailed them to find stores local to us b/c our Doctor is 2 hours away and uses a store near them. We wanted a store closer to us. I've never heard of any parents waiting that long for shoes, but I'm still new here myself. Is in casts or anything at this time. I would think that waiting 6 weeks with no method of holding his correction could lead to a relapse. As for the heal dropping, our Doctor (Dr Herzenberg in Baltimore) said that the heal will not fully drop in most babies until they begin to walk. So I think this is pretty common. Austin's heal dropped after the tenotomy in his rt foot, but still hasn't dropped on his left which has MA. They don't perform Tenotomies on MA since the malfomation is in the ligaments only. I hope this helps a little. Again welcome to the group. , Brett and Austin > Hi everyone, > I am new to the club, my son was born 6/11/02 with unilateral > club foot, although it wasn't properly diagnosed until he was 2 1/2 > weeks old. Guest guest
Thanks for the input, I will mention to my doctor that the place he prefers takes too long. He has been without cast for 2 weeks now, that is what makes me nervous. I also just found out last week that my company is making an immediate switch in insurance companies and 's specialist is not covered under new plan which goes into effect 10/1. I hate to switch doctors at this point, especially since some treat so differently. I loved your question about the potty training. I have thought that myself numerous times. I trained my daughter at 22 months and can't imagine if she couldn't get out of bed herself and go. I am so excited about finding this site!! Guest guest
Hello Karyn and ! Welcome to this board! It is a wonderful source of information and support. Our son was born on 4/12/02 with unilateral clubfoot and I was SO happy to discover this discussion group as well... it has been incredibly helpful to us. About your questions -- I am no expert, but it doesn't sound usual to me that you have had to wait so long for your DBB/FAB. As far as I am aware, people usually go straight from the casts into the shoes and bar. I haven't heard of others who have been left out of casts for a long period before getting the DBB, and I know that our doctor re-casts the foot if there are ever delays getting the shoes and bar, because she wants the foot held in the correct position until they arrive. I don't want to alarm you unnecessarily, but I think you are right to be asking questions. Has your doctor dealt with many clubfoot cases? Has the orthotist? One thing that might be helpful is to let us know where you are, so that if there are other clubfoot parents in your area they might be able to share their experiences with you, and let you know what resources they use. I am in Canada, so I can't help out with the insurance questions, but most of the people on this board are in the States, and probably have lots of information about what health plans cover what... About the heel not dropping, I think that that is quite common. We were also told that the heel (the talus) wouldn't completely drop until our son started weightbearing. Please let us know how things go. Best of luck to you and ! Guest guest
I am in St. sburg, Florida, so if anyone out there has any recomendations for Doctors I would greatly appreciate it! Guest guest
Karyn, Welcome to the group. I'm not around much myself these days, but happened to drop in and read your message. 2 weeks is too long to be out of casts or shoe/bar. Definately call your doctor and request assistance. What can/usually happens in this situation, is that your sons' foot can loose the correction that was obtained with casting. If you try to put him in the shoes when they do arrive, he could very well have trouble adjusting to the rotation of the shoe as he will have lost the correction that the shoe is meant to maintain. Most likely, the doctor would need to re-cast your son to get back that correction before trying the shoe/bar again. It's vitally important that the foot be fully corrected before going into the shoe or your son will have problems either tolerating the shoes or problems with the foot itself. If he has been out for 2 weeks, I don't see how the foot could be fully corrected any longer. I suggest that you also make another post here, and put " Need Help In Florida " in your title line so that you will attract the attention of any other parents in your neck of the woods. I'm sorry that I'm not able to give you better news. But you really have found a great group of people and a great resource for helping you and your child through this. There are so many in's and out's to clubfoot correction that don't get covered at the doctors. I'm sorry I can't help you with the insurance issues. I just don't have any experience dealing with that. All I could suggest is that you contact the new insurance carrier and explain your situation and see if they won't work with you on this, being that he's in the middle or near the end of his treatment. My best wishes to you and .
