I really feel for you and Langan and family. To me, it seems Langan's

behaviour is pointing towards her tummy not feeling good. I think you said

that you have eliminated all dairy, correct? We went through this for a

whole year off and on. The first month was the worse and the digestive

enzymes (shared before) took care of the worse and made the diet bearable.

But, we still dealt with tummy aches, negative attitudes and behavioural

issues. Shan was a very happy child prior to the diet. These past 6 months

we have our happy child back. We did not get Shan's happy attitude back

until we took care of her tummy issues.

Looking back, the initial week when we started the diet wiped out Shan's

digestive system. I'm wondering if this happened to Langan. If I could go

back to that first month I would have eliminated all cream and given Shan

bacteria capsules (acidophilus etc.) to quickly replenish her bacteria.

After being on the diet for a year we realized that it was her gut. We

spent a whole year giving her oils that aggravated an already aggravated

stomach.

Today, it seems Shan's stomach hurts when she is producing too many ketones

and when we give too much fat in a form of oil or butter in the latter part

of the day. We give most of her fats in the form of cheese, some butter,

and nuts. At supper time I will not give her more than 12g butter/oil (not

much for a 9 year old). The rest of her fats have to come from cheese,

hamburger etc. It seems that she is especially vulnerable before bed time.

There seems to be something about having that fat in her stomach which

digests slower and affects her when she lays down to go to sleep at night.

Another thing I noticed is that if Shan does not drink a glass of water with

her meals then she gets a stomach ache. She needs the water to dilute the

concentration of the fat in her stomach. Shan is presently at a .8:1 ratio

(in the first year she was 4:1). If this affects her stomach at such a low

ratio, then I expect for the kids at higher ratios it can really cause them

to not feel well.

One final thought, when we " fixed " Shan's stomach and she felt better, her

seizures improved significantly. There is definitely a connection between

the gut and brain. If the gut feels terrible then there can be seizures and

negative attitudes. When the gut is well then the seizures related to the

gut resolve. And, our child feels better and acts happy.

Rhonda,

Maybe you have hit on the problem. I definitely think Langan's

tummy is a big problem for her. It always has been, and it

certainly hasn't gotten easier on keto!

We have not eliminated dairy. She is on 4:1. Is it possible to

eliminate dairy on a 4:1? Our dietician makes all of our meals b/c

the program we had wasn't accurate enough and Langan seems sensitive

to any fluctuations. Maybe I should call the dietician and see if

we can eliminate dairy?? I don't know what she'll do without

her " ice cream " - what do you use as a substitute? I am definitely

interested in trying this out. Anything to make my little one happy

again!

Thanks! I may be bugging you about this again soon.... = )
