The tests are to check both your white and red blood cell counts and how at risk you are for infection. If they are very low, either one or both, they will want to give you an injection to boost them. When you are on chemo your immune system becomes highly compromised when your blood counts are low and a simple cold can wind you in the hospital with pneumonia. Then they will take the same blood tests the day of your chemo to make sure your counts have risen enough for you to have the treatment. If they have not they will postpone chemo treatments until your counts are at an acceptable level.

I highly recommend that you write any questions you have in a notebook and take it with you to the Onc's office and ask the Onc whatever you need to know. Not that we're not happy to answer whatever and whenever we can but your medical professional can give you the best possible answers.

Is it only to count white blood cells, or is there another purpose. I am really worried about it, does anybody know more ?Carin
