Zoloft - Lactation Risk L2

Alternative: Paroxetine

According to the AAP: Drug whose effect on nursing infants is

unknown

but may be of concern

Wellbutrin - Lactation Risk L3

Paxil - Lactation Risk L2

Prozac - Lactation Risk L3

Sertraline = Zoloft

Paroxetine = Paxil

Lactation Risk Cat L2: SAFER; Drug which has been studied in a limited number

of bf'ing women without an increase in adverse effects in the infant. And/or,

the evidence of a demonstrated risk which is likely to follow use of this

medication in a bf'ing woman is remote.

Lactation Risk Cat L3: MODERATELY SAFE; There are no controlled studies in

bf'ing women, however the risk of untoward effects to a bf infant is possible;

or, controlled studies show only minimal non-threatening adverse effects.

Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk

to the infant.

Just a guess but it looks like Zoloft or Paxil are the 2 drugs to choose from.

I can just reference pregnancy and lactation risk categories...don't have the

info for libido and weight gain.

Zoloft doesn't sound like it would cause weight gain, according to Hale, adult

concerns are diarrhea, nausea, tremor and increased sweating. Also states in

regards to babies that the transfer of sertraline and its metabolite to the

infant is minimal - very remote in infants where maternal doses are less than

150 mg/day.

Paxil, according to what I'm reading, does appear to 'possibly' contribute to

weight gain as the adult concerns listed are sedation, headache, dry mouth,

dizziness, nausea, insomnia, constipation and seizures.

Sounds like Zoloft may increase your metabolism indirectly whereas Paxil does

the opposite. Just my $0.02 , best to ask your doc when you see him/her.

Re: Antidepressants

Zoloft,

Wellbutrin,

Paxil

Prozac

* must be compatible with breastfeeding

hopefully not affecting libido

avoid weight gain

Lyssa,

As a matter of fact, I just spoke with my doctor last week about getting on anti

depressants after having the baby. Depression runs in my family, and I just

know I will experience SOME type of " baby blues. " I plan on taking Zoloft. If

anyone has any info on this drug feel free to share, but so far I have been told

that it shouldnt be a problem. Actually, my doc gave me about 6 weeks of

samples to start taking even now if I need to, but I am a little scared about

that at this point. I know they " say " that no one has had problems with them

while pregnant, but I am still unsure. Anyway, hope this helps.

  • 1 month later...

Busy day, so here's a quick response. I am 8 weeks pregnant and currently

on 40mg of Celexa. My psychiatrist said it does more harm to the baby to

have an emotionally unstable mother and that they have not found significant

effects in babies whose mothers take SSRI's during pregnancy. She

encouraged me to stay on it to keep myself healthy and happy and to ward off

post-partum depression. There was a thread about this about a month or so

ago, so you should check the archives for more advice.

Take care,

Meagan Jeronimo
