I would fully understand that however they are saying he needs hearing aids but

won't get them cause audio says no dr says yes ?

not all contradictory. The digital aid makes sense because with a digital aid

you can amplify just the middle frequencies. Then you attach an FM to the

digital aid especially for use at school because then he can hear and understand

(hopefully!) the teacher without background noise and distance making it hard to

understand. Hearing aids alone are not enough for a classroom situation so that

is why you add the FM. in GA

Hi ,

Your situation sure sounds confusing. The most confusing thing to

me is, I have never heard of an audiologist asking a doctor for

advice on prescribing hearing aids. Usually it is the audiologists

who know much more what hearing aids are appropriate for each kind

of hearing loss than the doctors do. Audiologists are the ones that

do the prescribing of the hearing aids.

Has your son ever tried hearing aids? He can try them for a certain

time period (30 days) without you having to pay for them. Nearly

all implant centers would require a person to try hearing aids

before implanting anyway. Can you demand that he be fitted with

hearing aids? If I were you, I would insist on the digital kind

that have the most ability to be turned up loud for a severe-

profound loss -- in other words, the ones that can keep up with a

progressive hearing loss if necessary.

Also, does the doctor think he needs an implant now when he is 10,

or when he is 20? That is confusing to me.

Another question: When you talk about an FM trainer, are you

talking about the kind that has walkman-type earphones and does not

require hearing aids? I think those exist. If this is what you are

talking about, then I think your son definitely needs more. He

needs hearing aids (or perhaps an implant) -- something that he can

use to hear well all the time, not just at school. For school, he

should have an FM system in addition to the hearing aids, like

says, to boost the teacher's voice above the background noise

so he can hear it clearly. (By the way, usually the school pays for

the FM system, and you or your medical insurance pays for the

hearing aids.)

Please email if you have questions!

Oh -- I feel so bad for you! You sound really, really

frustrated and sad!

I think there are issues at the school you'll need to tackle but

first your son needs to hear.

I've obviously never met your son. I am not an audiologist either.

However, I have never heard of an FM trainer with walkman-type

headphones being the solution for a child with significant hearing

loss.* (The loss must be significant if any doctors or audiologists

are even debating whether or not he should get a cochlear implant. )

The main reason is with the trainer he can only hear one person at a

time -- the person with the microphone! With hearing aids or a

cochlear implant (depending which is the right thing for him) he

will be able to hear whoever is talking, not just the person with

the microphone.

I've never lived in Missouri, but you are in a good place as far as

resources go. There are several good oral schools there (where

students are taught to listen and speak) -- the Central Institute

for the Deaf, St. ph's, and the Moog Center. It might be worth

visiting them. They might be able to offer some really good advice.

One thing to remember is that your son has one big advantage: he

learned to talk before he lost his hearing. He will hear again and

he will learn to read. You will figure this out! (I bet he will

love hearing aids. Most kids who get them after losing their

hearing do!)

Best,

Lydia

P.S. Have you done this? Sit behind your son where he can't see your

face, say the following 6 sounds:

" Aaah Ooo Eee Sh Sss K " and ask him to repeat each one after you say

it. What do you hear back? This should give you some idea of what

he can hear -- what vowels and what consonants.

*Wait, I DO know a 12 year old who has no hearing in the high

frequencies who uses an auditory trainer! I guess she has perfect

hearing from the low frequencies to 2000 Hz and then nothing higher

than that. Hearing aids apparently don't help her. (High frequency

sounds actually feel painful to her) She is a good student, reads

well and plays piano. She has had this hearing loss her whole life

and it has not gotten worse. Her speech is pretty good, but I notice

she leaves off some consonants.

> Hi thanks I will use all this advice . ok fm trainer is like a

walkman teacher wears mic and he wears headphones

> ent, wants him to try hearing aids says he needs them insted of fm

trainer for all the time but, audio says no she don't think it will

matter or help due to his hearing changes and ranges?

> The one dr ent, said implants soon that audio w/her said no she did

not know what she was talking about of course we switched dr.

> Now we see childrens hosp. and they are the ones who also are

disagreeing hearing aids or fm ?Who do i listen to and HOW LONG DOES

HE GO?LIKE THIS ?NOT READING NOT HEARING ? this is my child and

because i am not a dr . no one will listen to what he wants or needs?

And the school just stinks they just are doing no good at all he is

in special reading but the teacher just tells him sound it out .

why aren't you sounding it out? HE CAN'T HEAR IT DUH!!!!!!i AM JUST

FRUSTRATED BEYOND HOPE!he deserves so much more!
