Hi - I'm so sorry you're having such a hard time. I've VERY glad you're

here!

My boys both are deaf - they are now 10 and 12. They both wear hearing aids AND

they have an FM system. The FM system is two parts - a set of " boots " that clip

on the bottom of their hearing aids and a mic the teacher wears. They both have

high powered, digital hearing aids that have worked great for them. The FM is

worn at school - it can be set so that our boys hear the teacher's voice louder

but they also can hear their classmates; or they can hear their teacher only.

Your son is fortunate in that he could hear before he lost his hearing - once he

gets amplified correctly (whether by hearing aids or an implant), he should do

well.

Keep asking questions! We're here to help you.

Take care

Barbara

You have every right to be frustrated. You trust the professionals to do the

best thing for your child, and you keep getting conflicting answers. I noticed

in a previous post that you live in Missorri. Are you near the St Louis area?

I'm not from there, but I hear there are some great schools for children with

hearing loss. Maybe contacting them would help clear up some of the confusion.

To be honest, I'm as confused as you are. If your son has had a hearing test and

it shows that he indeed has a hearing loss, I just can't understand why they

won't give him aids. I know there are lots of kids with cookie bite loses that

have aids. And with the CI, my understanding is that before someone gets a CI

they have to wear aids to see if they help, if not, then the CI is done.

I'm wondering what they would do if you got the FM trainer and it didn't work?

Would they give him aids then?

There are agencies that can help you pay for aids if you qualify, so not being

able to pay for them should not be the hold up.

My daugther was seen by a local children's hospital 6 times between birth and 2

years because there was a suspected hearing loss and she failed her abr twice at

another local hospital that does strickly diagnostic hearing tests for babies.

After 2 years of fighting, they finally agreed that she had a mod-severe loss in

both ears. I could kick myself for wasting 2 years believing them. Her hearing

stayed flat for a couple of years and then dropped. It is now a cookie bit

shape dipping down to about 85 dbs. We too don't know the reason and I wasn't

too concerned except when she began losing more hearing. We are now seeing a

genetist (sp?)

I have 2 points to this message. 1) I had to go to an ENT to get a

" prescription " for the audi to fit her with aids. He didn't specify which

hearing aid, etc, but I think it was just to tell the audi that he had checked

her, didn't find conductive loss, etc, so that they would know when they

recommend certain hearing aids. 2) Go with your heart, and don't let any

doctor/audi keep you from doing what you know is right. Find another audi. Also

tell your ENT that the audi doesn't want to fit him with aids... maybe he can

assist.

Also, it sounds like he is oral since he didn't start losing his hearing until

after he learned language. There is a website that lists a bunch of schools for

oral deaf education, and there are a lot in Missiouri:

http://www.oraldeafed.org/schools/index.html

Best of luck...
