We don't have an SUV but have a Toyota Sienna minivan and it's very quiet -

even with snow tires on!

We chose a van over an SUV. It was quieter and honestly, had more room in

it. The SUVs looked bigger and appeared roomier, but they weren't. When we

loaded both kids (10 and 13) into them for test drives, there was not that much

room left for anything else, compared with a van.

So, we bought a Honda Odyssey. Plus it has the highesst rankings as far as

safetly issues and dependability. As long as the AC is not blowing at top

setting or the stereo is turned up, Ian can hear us pretty well.

Not quite the dfeedback you were looking for, but we did drive SUVs this

spring and this is what we bought.

We came to the same conclusion regarding SUVs versus Minivans and bought the

Odyssey as well. Neal hears fine most of the time in it, but you're right

about the A/C. I wonder if other vans have quiter ones. In ours, especially

when the back A/C is on full blast (and living in an area where the 100's in the

summer are pretty common, that's often), even I can barely hear anyone.

Test drive everything before making a decision. We live in an area with very

winding roads and some pretty decent hills. So we drove those roads with

each car/van/suv we were considering. The Toyotas did not handle as well on the

curves as the Hondas. They felt looser, as though they did not hold the road

as well. But that is a very subjective opinion.

We'd had Volkswagons for years and loved the way they held the road. We only

stopped buying VWs when they stopped making desiels. (Desiels are now back,

but I don't think they're in the vans.) Anyway, the Honda's handling for both

our van and the sedan won out over the Toyotas. The VW products were not as

high on the safety records, so they were dropped from consideration for that

reason.

We now own an Odyssey and a Civic. We went with the smaller sized sedan

because my hubby uses the Civic as his work/commuter car and the gas milegae

was

better. I guess we're now a Honda family, although we didn't plan it that way.

Hi Martha - I'm new car shopping and wondered about the Pilot - they seem big

(having been a mini-van owner for a long time) and seem to have good cargo

space, true? Are they horrible on gas mileage?

Thanks!

Get a Toyota Prius. That is the quietest car on the market. Unless you

really really need an SUV.

I ordered my matrix and then rented a prius. I wish I had held out for the

prius. It is the most quiet car I've ever driven, good on gas, and roomy.

SInce it runs a lot on electricity, there is not some loud engine to deal

with.

We love our Nissan Pathfinder and Hadley does well in it. She even has enjoyed

having the sun roof and windows open this summer and requests it. We have long

conversations in the car and listen to music just fine. We have not used an FM.

We also tried out the Nissan Quest this summer, just to see what it was like.

She seemed to be fine in it, although that was not tested from the " way back " .

Hadley regularly drives in a Ford Explorer too. It's a bit more trucky that the

Pathfinder, but she still understands ok in it.

I do have to say, when Hadley was first learning language, I purposely rode with

her in the car to see if that helped to develop her listening skills in a car (I

did this partly because we spent up to 3 hours in the car once a week for AVT).

I really can't say whether this helped, but she is a good car listener.

Getting about 20 miles per gal - not good with all the driving I do - I

bought it a year ago April and have over 33,000 miles on it. YES, good

cargo space - We can fit A LOT. I will never go back to a van after this -

I had a Ford Windstar and was not happy.

We have a 2004 Expedition....I love it and it is very quiet. My son is only

8 months old so I am not sure about how quiet it is to him. He babbles in

the back and when he is crying, he stops when I put the Wiggles on! Good

luck!

Our 2002 Ex is quiet as well. When we bought our van it was quiet

(2000 Windstar) but when we went looking again it was amazing just

how noisy it really was compared to the newer models. We try not to

go off much in the van as a family because it is noisy. My personal

vehicle is a 2004 F-150 supercrew with the larger motor for towing

the camper that is unbelievably quiet for a truck, but then again it

is actually an expedition without tha back on it...LOL. Can't afford

to drive it lately due to gas prices though. My husband is wanting

to trade two of ours in on a jeep or a convertible. I want the

convertible (he says a jeep is a convertible...men.... haha) I don't

know how quiet either one would be!

Good luck and let me know what you decide and how it compares to the

others you test drive.
