I have no problem stating my starting weight as I have it in my signature line. On the day of surgery I was 290 and down from my high of around 303 (possibly higher, but this is what I have recorded at the doctor). I am currently at 204, up from the 193 that I hit before my TSH numbers started going up. My ideal weight would be around 140-145 (as a young person) and normal BMI for me would be 169 at the top end of the range. I would be elated with 185. Still overweight, but at 5'9" I could handle it.

I had surgery because my quality of life totally sucked. My pain level was very bad. You can follow my story on my web site via the link below to my journal, if you are interested.

At about 2-3 months post-op I started having major panic attacks that were resolved by getting magnesium injections and adding magnesium to my diet. This resolution was the result of my research and not the worthless input from my surgeon and other doctors.

I know many post-ops who, thus far, are having no problems and doing life just fine. I know others who have issues that they cannot get diagnosed (like passing out). I am not against the surgery, but I would never be a poster child for the surgeons saying this is the way to go given the serious consequences of it. Even with my problems I have better quality of life now than I had before. I am against the mass advertising that is going on to make it look like this is "the" answer to being fat, it is not and should be a very seriously researched decision for anyone considering. This surgery is not "pounds gone forever" and the weight can indeed come back - all of it. Changing eating habits is essential to keeping pounds from all coming back. That is easier said than done because we did not end up needing surgery because we had healthy eating habits and if you complicate that with hypothyroid issues it becomes even more essential to have good habits. Keep in mind, most bariatric programs are way under-testing post-ops for deficiencies and are not having their post-ops taking nearly enough supplements to keep them out of trouble. Our bodies are most resilient and can go for a long time without, but at some point they will demand attention. ly, I would love to just strangle those post-ops who think they do not have to do protein shakes daily (at least 90 grams of protein) or do substantial supplements daily for vitamins and minerals. I believe that I spend around $200 a month on protein and supplements.

Some time back I ordered Alpha Nutrition from the following web site. I like it, but with the und'xd thyroid problems, I actually felt bad taking it. I am pretty sure it was because of the Hashimoto's, I was/am overloaded with toxins and the Alpha was causing them to be dumped all at once....

http://www.alphanutrition.com/

anyway, they claim their formula is a complete meal replacement and I like to mix it with Orange Juice or even just something like Tapico orange drink or sunny delight or water. Any way...here is a blurb from their website... I intend to give it a go again after I have been on Armour for sometime and am feeling better. laura c. ps... not trying to sell anything here... just thought you all might be interested in their claims. I also contacted them regarding my symptoms and the problems I was having and they suggested I get some serious dx'ing done before I tried their stuff again.....

Alpha Nutrition Program

Introduction

by Gislason MD

The good news is that many common health problems can be resolved by changing your food supply. For years, we have known that heart attacks were diet-related. High blood pressure is related to high salt intake and millions of people have followed low salt diets. Others have pursued a variety of weight-loss diets with limited success. Now, the goals of nutritional advice are shifting toward improving fitness, increasing longevity, and cancer prevention.

We think of the Alpha Nutrition Program as a personal technology of health restoration and health maintenance. The program is a form of software, designed with the idea of re-programming your body to feel and function well. The central feature of the program is diet revision, a set of routines designed to achieve several health goals simultaneously.

The program has also become a diagnostic and therapeutic standard. Anyone can explore the possibility that a health-problem is related to his or her food supply by using the program. If the diet revision advocated by the program alleviates symptoms, you know that food was involved in the cause of your symptoms and your disease. You may not know exactly how your original diet caused the problem, but you find out how to make it better. We recognize a set of general health reasons for doing the program and another set of specific disease-related reasons. The program allows you to solve a variety of health problems in the form of self-directed therapy. The most encompassing reason for doing the program is to feel and function better. While we are focused on improving health by changing food choices and eating behaviors, we also recognize that important changes in food selection involve other changes in attitudes, personal, and social values. If individual changes become more common, we recognize that the changes we advocate will have political and economic impact.

Most of the people who have pursued the program have been ill for several years and wanted to get better. Several thousand people have contributed their experience to the evolving program and have done well. Through their efforts, we have learned about the process of diet change. We have also recognized a remarkable diversity of health problems that improve with diet revision.

Benefits of the Alpha Nutrition Program We have been impressed, pleased, and sometimes surprised by the positive impact of Alpha Nutrition in eight major areas of health concern:

* Resolution of some of the most common adult health problems such as asthma, eczema, hives, chronic rhinitis, chronic fatigue, migraine and tension headaches, indigestion, irritable bowel, chronic diarrhea, fibromyalgia, edema, and sleep disorders* Resolution of health, learning, and behavioral problems in children. Food problems start in early infancy and continue to develop into major health problems as children grow into an increasingly synthetic, contaminated and polluted environment.* Significant relief from several major chronic diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis. * Remarkable pain relief. Some chronic pain disorders are caused by a faulty food supply. This is the most surprising of our discoveries. Pain in all parts of the body, from the specific patterns of migraine or joint pain in rheumatoid arthritis to the non-specific pains that attack people mysteriously in the head, chest, abdomen, arms, or legs all have improved with diet revision therapy. * A solution for food-related illness and malnutrition problems in aging patients that stem from loss of interest in food, disorganized eating patterns, drug side effects, and symptoms from food allergy mechanisms that may lead to food avoidance.* Relief from emotional disturbances and mental disorders has been another surprising discovery. Often foggy minds, irritability, anxiety, panic disorder and depression will improve with diet revision. * Relief from eating disorders and other addictive eating and drinking behaviors. The program has been used in the treatment of bulimia, anorexia, and recovery from drug and alcohol abuse.* Successful weight management: even though the initial design of the program was not concerned with weight loss as a primary goal, the program proved to be successful in achieving weight management goals. We have also been encouraged and gratified to discover than many people who were successful in applying the program, used the experience for personal growth. Many patients began the Alpha Nutrition Program after years of chronic illness and were despondent; some had lost hope. With proper diet revision, their symptoms improved, their minds cleared, their energy returned, their zest for life was renewed and a whole new phase of personal growth began.

Yes, and I'm thinking that Sunny Delight also has a very bad preservative in it, a common allergen. Is it a sulphite or something like that, or is it one of the nitrites? Same thing as is in a lot of wines? Can't remember, just know it's there. That's why I never drink it.
