Guest guest
Hi Emma, My searching on this one over the years has shown me that for every article on the web that describes proven increased seizure susceptibility (and other neuro disturbances) from comsuming aspartame, there is another one that sets out to disprove it. Our hospital prefers that no foods used on the diet contain it, and I try to make sure that has it very sparingly. Freeman says in his book (pg 89 in 3rd edition) that 'some parents' have reported nutra sweet can cause seizures but doesn't go so far to say whether Hopkins hospital actually agree with this, or why. He does though recommend that the child is tested by witholding it for a week or 2 and observing seizure frequency after it has been eliminated. Personally, I don't think I have ever seen a direct seizure link with , but the articles that say it can be a seizure trigger also mention that not all folks have this apparent sensitivity. Quite a few kiddies on here are fine with it, but there are probably just as many who have def seen a link between the two. If any doubt at all exisits, and seizure control is not complete, it would be one of the first things I would be eiliminating if finetuning, ----- Original Message ----- > Read a message a while back asking why aspartame was in Ketocal. > Went away to find out and have now got the answer: > > In the US Ketocal has aspartame in it because there is and I > quote 'no medical evidence to show that aspartame causes seizures'. > > The reason it has sweetner in it at all is because it is for tube AND > sip feed and if it didn't have some flavour it would be horrible > (I've tried the non-flavoured variety and I can safely say it tastes > revolting! - the vanilla is not bad though.) > > Ok, before I get loads of you screaming at me about this aspartame > thing, I, like many of us, remember reading somewhere (still trying > to trawl the depths of all the paperwork I have collected over the > years - mental note, must do more filing!)that there IS a > connection.
