Hi Jody,

I would be really interested to hear how your feeding clinic visit goes. My

son is 2 and 1/2, we haven't tried Vital Stim, and haven't found

anyone offering it in the UK yet. Is Ethan's problem mainly aspiration?

That is the issue with , aspiration and swallowing dis-cordination.

Most of the feeding clinics I read up on seemed to be focused on the

psychological aspect of feeding once the child was safe to feed and no

longer suffering aspiration...is Milwaukee different?

Hi is

I have not heard of vital stim being done over here but I have heard of

something that uses similar principles here. I'll rack my brains but ask

's SLT (or is that is a foolish suggestion?).

This is a therapy that involves stimulating the muscles in the neck area. To do

this they attach electrodes to the neck to make the muscles contract. For a

child that does not know how to contract these muscles means that they have a

swallowing disorder.

This is a short version of what this is and what it does.

Hi Les,

Have a look at http://www.vitalstim.com/indexflash.asp which explains more,

but haven't heard of anyone in the UK getting it.

Simon - I asked SALT at Great Ormond St and they had heard of it but said it

wasn't approved for use in the UK or proven to be highly successful in their

view and therefore wasn't something they explored using at the current time.

The local SALT had not heard of it - not a hope!

I guess it would be a go to the States and pay for it yourself thing....

is, I will let you know how it goes after our June appt. Our ST recommended

us to Milwaukee as she has had other (non CHARGE) clients go there. Yes,

Ethan's problems are all of that, aspiration, etc. He had a swallow study last

fall and was able to eat a few spoonfuls of pureed foods, but after a few, he

had residual in his trach. I know it may be years before he eats orally so I'm

going to see what else they may have to offer. They do a total person approach

and have a GI doctor, nutritionist, ST and psychologist evaluate your child. I

do believe part of Ethan's problem is behavioral, but most of it is medical.
