Guest guest Posted September 13, 2004 Report Share Posted September 13, 2004 Hi, I am hoping that someone can give me a little insight on this because I don't understand this at all and to put it plainly I am just a little disgusted right now. Annika started her first day of her oral preschool class today. Today the school van came to pick her up and took her 20 miles to where the preschool was located. The driver not knowing how everything was going to run started to take Annika out of the van and follow another child and his mother into the school. Well, she was kind of told point blank don't take her out of the van we will come out to get her. Well, that is usually how it is but since there wasn't anyone outside waiting for the van she just thought well I will take her in. The class is to start at 10:30 and it is now 10:25. Well, I spoke to the other parent who brought her child in and she was told that class did not start until 10:30 and she needed to take her son out in the hall vs leaving him in the classroom because they were not ready for the kids yet. It was not 10:30 yet and class did not start until 10:30. Okay, wait a minute. According to my schedule 10:30-10:35 is hearing aid/implant checks and opening circle time. If you don't get the kids out of the school vehichles until 10:30 then how are you going to get all that done in 5 minutes. You can't do the listening check on the way into the school. There are several reasons why this concerns me. First, Annika has mild spastic Cerebral Palsy and is only ambulating with the help of a walker. So basically, in my opinion, she could take the whole 5 minutes (10:30-10:35) to get out of the vehichle and get into the school, put her backpack in the locker and arrive in the classroom. Okay we are already 5 minutes behind. Which brings up the other concern. They only have the classroom from 10:30-12 noon. So the 1 1/2 hour that they have these three kids is jammed packed. But when the driver picked up Annika they were outside waiting at 12 noon. So if they were 5 minutes behind to start what got cut to make them back on time? I have a problem that they only have her for 1 1/2 hour. I take her (on my own) to another oral preschool once a week and she is there for 3 1/2 hours vs the 1 1/2 hour. But that is another whole issue. What frustrates me is that in all my experiences with the boys and preschool, arrival could be up to 10 minutes before start time because you needed to have the kids settled and in place at the start time of class. Am I just missing something here? No, 5 minutes is not a big deal but what happens when winter comes and there are jackets, boots, hats, mittens and etc to take off????? The school day was only 3 hours. I used to get annoyed that they took a half hour for recess! With all that driving and all the help he needed at the time (brand new implant, changing communication methods), I wanted ALL the time spent in class or therapy! However, if I were you, before making an issue of it, I would wait a little while and see how it goes. You will probably face many battles, large and small, when it comes to Annika's education. I have a feeling this one could be one of the smaller battles. The danger in putting up a stink now may undermine your future ability to easily get what you want, because the school or district may come to view you as an unreasonable parent who is impossible to please no matter what. In this situation, my advice would be to only do something if the situation got a lot worse. But I do share your annoyance completely!!! Lydia (Minnesota native!)
