Hi everyone,

My name is Ron - I'm a 63 yr old man who was diagnosed in 1/04 with

Stage 3 c.c. and operated on March 4th. I had an adenocarcinoma of

the transverse colon (walnut size) and 8/14 lymph nodes that were

positive were removed. There was also a carcinoid tumor present in

the terminal ileum, 1.c cm in size (3 of 8 lymph nodes involved). I

had my surgery in Florida (I winter here) and I'm feeling fine -

eating well, walking a lot, etc. My post-op scans showed no other

malignancies present, and my onc here was quite positive about my

future.

I am due to start 6 months of " wipe-up " chemo - 5 FU - in Chicago in

a couple of weeks. I have an appointment with Dr. Al B. Benson. Of

course I have many questions. First, does anyone have any comments

regarding Dr. Benson? Second, what can I expect when I start

chemotherapy?

I look forward to hearing from all of you.

Best wishes,

Ron M.

Diane: I sincerely hope that you,the members of your immediate and extended

families have all had a colonoscopy. At the very least a virtual one. You

have

a wonderful attitude especially when you consider the loss of life and it

must have

been a very difficult peiod for you. I am sincerely sorry for all the sorrows

you have

endured and I feel that perhaps my own husband had the same three cancer mets

that was in your family. At least a test for occult blood in feces would

reveal a nunber

of things ,early discovery can prevent many complications. God bless you and

yours Jane M

Be careful about trusting the fecal occult blood test (FOBT) though. Not all

polyps and cancers bleed. And those that do, only do some of the time. So a

negative test result means nothing. And the false positive AND false negatives

rates are very very high with that test.
