<<Thanks for your reply. Do you know when it is too late for a cerclage?

Also at my 12 week u/s, they did not measure my cerix intravaginally. I

measured 3.4. Do you think that is a viable baseline measurement?>>

Kim,

With a cerclage, the earlier the better (mine was done at 11). 17 weeks

seems to be the latest gestation for a prophylactic cerclage.

US measurements are wildly variable. You can get disparities of several

millimeters just by emptying the bladder or tilting the pelvis, although I

think that intravaginal (a.k.a. " transvaginal " ) US is the best measurement.

3.4 centimeters is all right but perhaps on the short side. My cervix

measured 4.6 cm. at 10 weeks right before my cerclage, and I had had a prior

IC loss at 19 weeks. After the cerclage and with some degree of bedrest, my

cervix largely stayed over 4 cm. throughout the pregnancy.

In your shoes I would press the issue and ask for additional monitoring

(manual and US), the better to appreciate any softening, dilation, funneling

or shortening. Women have had short cervices naturally and carried just

fine, so best to keep an eye on this and act promptly if the trend is toward

shortening.

Best of luck,

Beth
