Guest guest
HI, Can anyone tell me what their experience has been weaning topomax. Joziah is down to 25/25/25 then on Monday he went to 17.5/25/25 but he seemed " off " His feeding schedule has been off so im sure that may have something to do with it. He wont wake for 11pm meals and wont drink the eggnog. So his calories are not always consistent.... On Wednesday i put him back on 25/25/25 .. ill try again on Monday to go to 17.5/25/25 Pls shed some light.. Thank You, Cleofi Blass Re: Re: Goodbye Lamictal Thanks, Glenna! Guest guest
Dear Cleofi, Although I was not on the Ketogenic Diet, during my time taking Topamax I suffered badly with a very low appetite, I went down to just 120 pounds weight, uncalled for with my age and height. I might say there was some real friction between my parents and myself, both concerned at me not eating and my stubborn nature not wishing to contradict what my consultant was doing......... ie: helping eliminate seizures of course. Anyway, after six months of pressure, I finally decided to wean myself of Topamax, since I didn't see my consultant that frequently I had to do it unaided, knowing that if seizures re-occurred at anytime to go back up to the previous level/dose prior. Luckily I always keep track of my meds history, how and when they're introduced, only in reverse. I started by reducing my night time dose first, then 2 weeks later the same reduction on my morning dose, then 2 weeks later reducing the night time dose once more and so on........ Since I was on quite a heavy dose (adult dose) it took about 3 months before I was finally off Topamax, and like you might imagine, my appetite was restored to somewhere near normal. Like I say, should you detect any increase in seizures/auras then at the very least go back up to the higher dose that was taken once before, where there was no ill effect in it's reduction - A pharmacist would be able to advise also, if not a consultant or doctor. I hope that helps, Phil Re: Goodbye Lamictal Hey , YIPPEEE! Langans' big brave momma is going for it! Sounds like you've got all your ducks in a row, so I'm sure you are ready! My very best wishes! Guest guest
Cleofi, My son was recently weaned off Topomax and it was awful. I've come to expect that with any wean, though. He was on 45 mg 3x daily, and we reduced by 7.5 mg a week. At first, the withdrawal seizures were so bad, I stopped altogether. I got lectured by the neuro, though, cuz they had started Nate on another drug, and with the unreduced levels of Topomax, he was on " too many meds. " After we hit a certain point (can't remember how many mgs), it was a cakewalk. But, initially, it was painful to watch. Good luck.
