Lederle's minocycline

In the business section of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, dated Tuesday, June 11th, there was a brief article stating Baxter International had agreed to buy Wyeth's ESI Lederle unit to gain sales of generic injectables. The last sentence of the article stated "Wyeth is leaving the generic-drug business."

On June 3, 2002, the FDA approved Wyeth's application to continue manufacturing Minocin - intravenous, oral suspension and pellet filled capsules.

Unlike minocycline from other pharmaceutical companies, Lederle's minocycline could be counted on to consistently give good results.

If this is of concern to you, and you would like to contact Wyeth, their phone number is 1-888-797-5638, and their mailing address is -

Dear Ethel,

Oh, boy. I've never been straight on this, and now I'm more confused than ever. We WANT the generic--right? And since Lederle is getting out of the generic business, if "Wyeth's application to continue manufacturing Minocin - intravenous, oral suspension and pellet filled capsules" was approved by the FDA, this is not the stuff we want?

I am so sorry to be thick-headed about this. Also, let me just say that I'm not sure my daughter has ever been on the right stuff, even though we asked her doctor to mark on the prescription, "pelletized." And we've never wanted to break a capsule open, fearing it wouldn't work as well, and because they are so expensive.

Dear Ellen,

It's preferable to take the brand name - Minocin, but many insurance companies won't pay for the brand name so the patient is forced into using the generic (which is much cheaper) unless they pay out of their own pocket. However, we have found that all generics are not equivalent. We've always recommended ESI Lederle's (Wyeth) minocycline because it has proved to be the only one that consistently gave good results. Now it appears it will no longer be available.

You may remember some time back information came to us that Minocin would no longer be made in the pellet form. Evidently this is not true.

If you want to know if your daughter is on the brand name or the generic, have her call the pharmacist who filled the prescription and ask.
