How weird is it that the school asked me to drive my daughter to school tomorrow

because they don't know if they have a bus driver for her? Should I tell them I

want to be paid? LOL!!

I had to drive my son to school for the first 4 days this year because they

didn't have a car seat, or a harnes or anything to keep him in the seat. It's

not even a school bus it is a private contractor. Apparently the school told

them that he was a full time wheelchair user, instead of an occasional

wheelchair user. Last year I was supposed to call and set up transportation but

they didn't give me the info until when school started and I didn't have a

vehicle to drive him in so he missed two weeks of school while waiting for it to

get set up.

Donna,

You ARE definitely within your right to ask for a reimbursement per

mile, round trip, at whatever their standard rate is! They probably

have one for those parents who choose to drive their kids and it's

probably something like 40 cents/mile. Of course, it would be bad

if they figured you were OK with this on a regular, sporadic basis.

We were stupid in that we did not negotiate driving reimbursement

with our district in California when we were taking our son to

school about 60 miles away. We probably could have, but at the

time, worried it would adversely impact our son's placement out-of-

district. Plus we felt sorry for our one-school-district which we

loved dearly. But we should have asked! Our cars sure suffered for

it on all those twisty, turny, mountain back roads that we took to

avoid the traffic. Instead we claimed charitable driving as an

itemized deduction on our income tax at a much worse rate --

something like 14 cents/mile.
