Welcome, ! When I had breast cancer 17 years ago,

I sure wished there had been a supportive place for my

kids (ages 5 to 19); the Web hadn't been invented yet

and there was nothing in our small city.

How is your mother doing now? Is she still in

treatment? My best to both of you,

Nan

Actually, a little trivia, the web was invented back then, it was only for intellectual snobs at that time. ;-) It may have been more like 15 years ago though. Anyway, there were think groups that conversed with each other and had web pages to discuss things like science and physics and such.

I do remember, and very much miss the days, when I could surf for something important and there were only 100 or 200 websites on the subject and they were mostly from scholars, not a bunch of places trying to sell you miracle cures or something. Looking up something for a project for my son or some information about some famous person was so much easier back in the mid to late nineties. Now it's just too much input.

Actually not quite... the Web didn't exist back when I

got cancer (1988). We had only the Gopher, which was

all ASCII text. The Web as we know it, with pictures &

HTML, was invented in 1995 by Tim Berners-Lee. It was

still a fine place through the late 1990s, though, and

I agree with you about its usefulness for scholars

before it went commercial. :)

That would make the web only 10 years old. I had friends who were online with prodigy before my son was born, he's now 12, and we'd search for things then. Maybe it wasn't known as the web then but there was online access and pages with pictures.

When I was diagnosed with my second bc my son was in elementary school and they had what I told him was a talk dr. Yes, that's right, the Web has only been in wide use

for 10 years. -- though the Internet began in the 60s,

the World Wide Web wasn't easily browsable until 1995,

thanks to the development of graphical browsers (first

Mosaic, then Netscape). Prodigy, Clarinet, etc., were

earlier Internet services.

The Living Internet is a handy reference for

cyberhistory:

Hi everyone, June, thanks for the trivia. I didn't start really using google maybe a year ago. So you were way ahead of me. I finally finished my radiation treatments. YEA!!! I will have to go to the oncologist soon for my medicine either Tamifen or Arimidex. Has anyone experienced any side effects with these drugs? Hi everyone, June, thanks for the trivia. I didn't start really using google maybe a year ago. So you were way ahead of me. I finally finished my radiation treatments. YEA!!! I will have to go to the oncologist soon for my medicine either Tamifen or Arimidex. Has anyone experienced any side effects with these drugs?
