When we were hanging out with other parents at AG Bell, there was much joking as well as good natured comments about how others probably think we are nuts (or at least politically incorrect!) Betsy Yes! We do that as well. Our 10-yr-old is in a lovely stage where she simply ignores us or refuses to answer. One of us usually grumbles " and she's not the deaf one! " Now I say to her -- " would you like another week of grounding .... you're not deaf so we shouldn't have to repeat ourselves? " (she recently finished a week of grounding for storming out and slamming the front door in my face, because of an arguement over a yo-yo with Ian. geez.) Ya gotta love puberty and hormones. ugh. There's a line in a Mel movie that my husband and son parody. The line is used when calling Mel over (pardon the crude joke) Someone says: " Oh, piss-boy ... " They have adapted it to be " oh, deaf-boy... " when calling to Ian and " yes, old-man " in answer to my husband. They think it's hilarious. Guest guest Posted July 9, 2004 Report Share Posted July 9, 2004 I have lots of issues, while hearing is not one of them I often have what feels like water in my ears and have a hard time understanding. My biggest issue is when I can't seem to think straight. I know what I want to say but can't say it. My point is I laugh at myself all the time. Of course it really isn't funny when you come down to it, but if you can't make light of our issues than we just get depressed about them and I would rather laugh at myself. You need to go see Joan. " Joan does his mapping. LOL. Once when he was telling me something, I wasn't really listening. He could tell I was not understanding or not paying attention, so he finally said (with a big smile), " Mom! Do you need to go see see Marilyn!? " (Marilyn is his audiologist). That's exactly what we say to HIM when we are wondering if he needs a new map!!
