Guest guest
Is this to me or the other on here Sandi? If to me, we are still plodding along on full keto, 3.5:1 ratio, 1500 cals per day. ----- Original Message ----- > > Are you on a modified Keto diet or Atkins?? > Sandi

Guest guest
We did think about taking off keto or moving to Atkins actually Sandi, and one of the reasons was due to his metabolic alkalosis whilst in hospital. The renal team surmised that his kidneys were probably over compensating with bicarb to try and negate acidity after being on the diet for so long (2 yrs at that point) and they thought the only way to stop this happening was to pull him out of ketosis and switch this mechanism off. This all happened after his bhb had recently shot thru the roof though, which may have kick-started the compensatory process, as he had been thru a brief phase of metabolic acidosis and overall blood gases instability in PICU before the alkaline ph started creeping in. But we think that adding the topomax is fooling his kidneys for now, or at least over-riding the bicarb production, and he has returned to being acidic, (awaiting blood results at the mo to comfirm) so at this point, on we plod with keto... The renal team actually thought btw, that by adding an acidic inducing med he would over compensate even further, and warned that this could make him even more alklaline, but so far this hasn't happened. Gulp. ----- Original Message ----- > It was meant to you > I knew all the trouble had and was wondering if you had to make diet > changes-- > Best to you & !! > Sandi
