Guest guest
Today I got the greatest news in the world. My son had a new test - a PET and CAT scan fusion. Apparently this gives a much more detailed and fuller picture of what is going on. The hopsital here had been doing them for only a week, so we feel quite lucky that he got one. The great news is that he is NED! He was diagnosed in Jan. 04 with Stage IV colon cancer with metastis to the liver (2 tumors) and 8 of 24 lymph nodes positive. He had a colon resection mid-January (one liver tumor removed for biopsy), started chemo (Avastin) in Feb. The first MRI showed the remaining liver tumor had shrunk by 50%. The second MRI showed it as stable and the doctor said he thought it was dead but the body takes some time to delete it from the system. Turns out he was right! The combined PET and CAT scan could find no evidence of disease. Now he will take three more months of chemo, just to be on the safe side, and then he will go on a monitoring schedule. This just goes to show you that the human heart and will is impossible to quantify in the healing process. The first oncologist that saw my son essentially told him that he had maybe 2 years and to begin to put his affairs in order. We fired him immediately and found a set of doctors we could all believe in and that believed in my son. I also got onto this site and read every posting - this site has helped more than I can say. So, a great big thank you to all of you here for your support, information and just all around caring.
