Dear ,

Bactrim has been around forever, when my daughter had a low immune system as

a child, age 2, and now she is 18, they put her on a daily dosage so that

she would quit getting ear infections. This was after tubes in her ears and

gamma globulin shots for a while.

Bactrim is a sulfa drug -- the oldest class of antibiotics, and one of

the safest. It's what they commonly give babies for ear infections.

You can find sites all over the Internet with horror stories about any

drug, because there will always be a small percentage of the

population who don't tolerate it well. (This is the first things that

improve huge when we start making everybody's full genomic analysis

part of their medical file: doctors will know ahead of time how you're

likely to react to something, and bad drug experiences will become

almost a thing of the past.) You're hearing from a few dozen (or

hundred) people who had a bad time. You're not hearing from the 20

million or so who take this drug every year -- and have for over 80

years -- and were just fine.

The downside is that, according to Dr. Burrascano, sulfa is damned

near useless against Lyme in any of its forms. If it were me, I'd want

to know more about my doc's thinking on this. What have his

experiences been with Bactrim against Lyme? Is he aware that other

well-known Lyme docs don't consider it useful? What's his response to

that?

I took it for awhile and experienced what i thought was an allergic reaction. I

know now that it was a herx reaction pertaining of a fever like reaction, but

not registering as a fever. I had a worsened headache, body aches, kind of like

a small flu. Good luck!

Has bactrim been helpful for anyone? My doc just prescribed it and I have

been reading some horrible side effect stories about it that has me scared. I

had to stop taking doxy due to a bad reaction (rash, extreme dryness and

blisters on my face) after 3 months, and the LLMD told me to start bactrim.

Thanks,

Dara

Thanks Sara

Well, I will ask the LLMD those questions, though I believe he is using it for

the babesia. He had prescribed it in addition to doxy which I took for 3 months,

but stopped last week due to a skin rash and severe dryness on my face. He said

to stop the doxy but to still take the bactrim. I waited to start though til

today. Within about 3 days off of doxy, my face cleared. I'll have to see what

he adds for the lyme.

Thanks Elaina

I started it today, but am thinking I should wait a week, as I am going on

vacation this Thursday for a long weekend and don't want to have a reaction

while I am away.
