Guest guest
We did it. We are one week on Atkins and have had high ketones for a few days now. Seizure control is better every day and is definitely as strong as we had with keto. We give Lynden unlimited protein. We keep her carbs down below 20 per day as prescribed on the Atkins induction. We do not load her down with extra fat at all. We just allow it. I can make her a low carb shake and instead of using just water, I may add a little cream. We took a voluntary break in December but her ketones came right back on Atkins. She is happier. She can EAT. Also, we seem to be doing fine with subtracting sugar alcohols and going by the net carbs as you see on all the packaging. This means lots of ice cream and frozen treats from Breyer's Carb Smart and Klondike. Her food is as close to normal as we've been in a long time. Best wishes, Ann Shepard Keto vs. Atkins Thoughts please, from anyone. Our daughter Kya has been on the diet since August 03. She did super. Took to the diet with few complaints and was off her meds and seizure free in no time. Well, then mid December she lost it. She started cheating non stop, fell completely out of ketosis and returned to non stop seizures. She was an emotional basket case. She would cry for hours on end for foods we could not give her. Things have straightened back out now. Back in ketosis, seizures gone. Our neurologist called a few days ago to check in on Kya. He also wanted to talk to us about our options. He had just returned from a conference where it was discussed that the Atkins diet might work as well as the Ketogenic diet. The number one benefit being less restrictions. We are going to discuss this with our dietitian. I am wondering what everyone else's opinion is on this. Ketosis very much so seems to be the key for Kya. I really have to wonder if we couldn't get the same results by maintain ketosis with the Atkins plan. I would love to throw the scales out the window! Let me know your thoughts and I will share our dietitian thoughts when we get them. Diane

Guest guest
is on the Atkins after 2 years on keto and he has done great. He is no longer hungry and begging for food and I must say that I was so happy (actually elated)to get rid of the scales and the meals plans. We are doing 20g per day as induction is on Atkins. We do not add the cream and butter anymore but I do use it on his veggies and use cream for ice cream. I also add in cream and butter to some meals if he has a carb (ie bread for french toast). Hopkins did release some preliminary study research indicating that it is working for kids. I think they had 20 kids on it. I don't think that he will be able to resume a normal diet and remain seizure free. I think that he will probably be on the Atkins diet for a long time. I know this because he still has breakthroughs when he gets too much carbs. Otherwise, he is sz free. Good luck

Guest guest
The more and more I hear about the Atkins working for these kids the more and more I want to try this. I tried the Atkins myself a few years back, I did give up on it because it was just not for me as far as a diet for losing weight but at least I have some background with it and it seems ALOT less restrictive! Im seriously thinking of trying it out before we have to go in four weeks to start the keto diet...maybe we can get seizure control and win the doctor over by doing so. We'll see I guess! Guest guest
I've thought about doing this too (starting atkins with ) before we start, but I'm afraid to change any meds. I guess I need to let that go since we will be doing that soon w/ the keto. I know many have said that it's hard to drop the meds even though they haven't been working. I would like to hear how others are doing on the Atkins, has very few sz and has been very controlled w/ his depakote (the first drug we tried) at higher levels (the side effects have been the big problem). So I was wondering do children who have been easily controlled on meds have a better outcome w/ keto? I've never heard the stats on that. Thanks guys! w/son 21mo starting keto Feb 2nd. Guest guest
Here's the actual literature. http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/Press_releases/2003/12_09_03.html It was 6 individuals with 3 being under 12 years in age. 3 out of the 6 were able to be seizure free and reduce meds, 2 of the 3 were children, and the other was an adult. Hope this clarifies. :-) Jen Re: Keto vs. Atkins-Diane I'm pretty sure it was only 2 kids. Kathy > Hopkins did release some preliminary study research indicating that > it is > working for kids. Guest guest
I thought you guys tried Atkins and had to go back and up the ratio.
