It cost me around $17000 (2 hips) for hospital, surgeon's fee, PT during my

stay. One hip would be approx. half and I think Euro exchange rate for dollar

is better now.

Dr DeSmet is by far the best deal for the money and quality of surgery in the

world.

I think the Birmingham, UK docs are apprx. 30% higher. The only cheaper price

would be India and Australia and I can't quote you their prices.

Hi Steve: Resurface in Belgium is 9,500 Euros (2500 for surgeon fees

and 7000 for hospital). Depending on how long you stay in the

hospital you may get some of it back. This includes all physio and

head operating room nurse coming to the Holiday Inn for treatments.

I was quoted 9,500 to 10,500 pounds for surgery in England but have

heard that the further north you go in England the cheaper it gets.

For my money Belgium was a steal. Dr. De Smet has negotiated at rate

of 85 Euros per night at the Holiday Inn which includes the full

breakfast buffet. There is a pool at the hotel and Jan will cover

your scar with waterproof tape so you can swim while you are there - a

great thing to do on day 3 on. Easy on the joints and good exercise.

Depending on your recovery you could leave by the Monday morning - our

american hippy, Terry, did that. He actually left without crutches on

the Monday morning.

the only other cost would be your airfare and the amount of chocolate

you buy while there (and that could be significant).

A bargain to be sure (at least in comparison to the US options).

Chocolate isn't high on the list so it will be easy to get off cheap.

Ah yes, but I forgot about the Belgian beer - I am not a beer drinker

but they have more than 100 brands and I have a reliable source who

tells me they are all good!!!

Now you have my interest (being a Wisconsin kid and all). Perhaps I

should replace the post-op medication with the beer. If medical

insurance covers pharmacuticals, will they cover beer?

operations very successfully and no-one seems to a bad word to say about him and

his team.

I believe that the operation is also fairly cheap in South Africa butt is not

just the cost factor to be taken into account but also the experience of the

surgeon. I would not be keen to have a newly trained surgeon practising on my

hip.
