Hi, Pat -

Welcome to the group. I believe the only working chat group is if you

have aol, but if you post messages, everyone on the list will get them

- some sooner than others, depending on the way they get the messages.

What is it you're concerned about with salt?

Do you mean non-iodized salt? The only time that you need to use it

is during the 2 weeks before your RAI treatment, while you are on the

LID (low iodine diet). Where are you located? In the US, you can

usually find it in grocery stores next to the iodized salt. It will

be called salt, and will probably say something like " this salt does

not supply iodine, a necessary nutrient "

Hi Pat!

There are other Canadians on the ThyCa listserv......but many have

likely been away from e-mail, trying to keep warm in -40 C temps while

participating in Super Bowl parties.

Re the Canadian non-iodized salt saga.

Non-iodized salt is difficult to find in Canada because all salt sold

for consumer use must be iodized under Federal law.

While Windsor Salt has confirmed that their pickling salt is non-iodized,

they have not (or maybe cannot) confirm the actual iodine content. This

is an important consideration when on the low iodine diet.

You may be able to find non-iodized salt at Jewish specialty food stores.

Non-iodized Kosher Salt is often imported from the US for religious

holidays - like Passover. You could call ahead to check and see if this

product is available.

Any trips planned to the US?

Please let me know if you still can't find non-iodized salt.

The Canadian Thyroid Cancer Support Group (Thry'vors Inc) has about

107 on-line members now and someone has got to have some salt stored

for those unexpected glow moments.

As mentioned last week, I contacted Sifto Salt Company. Their pickling salt

is Kosher and non-iodized (has no additives period). As far as I have seen

they are the main company that distributes to Manitoba. They are based in

Ontario so you should be able to find them their too.

I asked them if their salt contains iodine and that was their response. You

can e-mail to nosewrty@... (their company e-mail) to ask

more questions.
