Guest guest Posted August 17, 2004 Report Share Posted August 17, 2004 Well the good news for Phil is no more Oxaliplatin. That means the muscle aches and chills are gone for now. As seems to be the nausea at least for now. But the strangest thing happened. Phil broke ouyt with hives towards the end of the 5FU leucovorin drip. The nurses gave him 25mg of Benadryl which cleared it up right away but I have Benadryl tablets should they return. he also got the Avastin once they knew he was o.k. If anyone knows about this reaction drop me a line. Otherwise he feels good and for the first time since starting chemo he came home and was comfortable and able to eat! . He still has a 46 hour pump with 5FU. Hopefully there won't be mouth sores but since using the Biotene that has not been much of a problem. By the way Biotene has aloe vera but no yucky aftertaste. I left the treatment room to get sick and when I looked into the mirror I noticed my hands, face and neck were beet red. I started to have trouble breathing and when I came out of the bathroom the nurses started to panic. They sat me down gave me a benadryl and added a drip of something. I calmed right down and they restarted my drip and it was no problem. Oncologist said I built up a reaction to the Oxi. From then on I was treated with atropine and I didn't have anymore reactions. Leucavorin, at a very high dose, is what put Bert in the hospital last October 3/4 of the way through his 5fu/leuc regime with a severe colon infection and again brought it about towards to end of that treatment when over Christmas/New Years he had diarrhea so bad (15 to 20 times a day) that I had to give him shots in the abdomen three times a day to try and stop it. I don't know if it was the leucavorin by itself or with the 5fu combo, but it truly did a number on him...again, pretty much towards the end. In January, when we switched oncs, he was put back on 5fu/leuc, but leuc at a reduced dosage...not much, but a little and oxal was added. He tolerated that real well all the way through a six month treatment. Yes Narice, your guy will be the one. He's amazing and you can tell him I TOLD YOU SO!!!! Iremember when they came out with KIDS flavors for toothpaste but to me even the fruity ones are too sweet tasting. To each his/her own.
