From experience I know that ectopic beats are not dangerous necessarily, and this is probably the case with you, also. I would try not to worry about it, but do mention it to your doctor. Of course, I know that telling an afibber not to worry about ectopics is like telling someone not to breathe, but I think the worry can make the problem worse. I try to ignore the ectopics and go on with whatever I am doing, but I have been thoroughly checked out by Holter monitor and EKG. My doctor has told me that I don't need to worry about ectopics. (I still do a little bit, though, :-) since they are unnerving.) Since your ectopics could be different in origin from mine, I think you should ask your doctor about it and then try to relax if your doctor tells you they are insignificant. That's what I have tried to do. I have resigned myself to ectopics and just feel extremely fortunate that they no longer lead directly to afib as they used to do. Good luck. in sinus in Seattle

Guest guest
Another question from a newbie. I'm worried I might be having Ectopics - about once or twice a week since my first AFIB episode about 1.5 months ago, I get this huge singular THUD in my chest. The sensation is almost like that of a mini-adrenaline surge accompanying the " thud " . Once or twice I felt mildly lightheaded for a few seconds afterward the thud, usually not. I'm worried it might be an ectopic beat. How dangerous is this? How common is this? Unfortunately, my Holter didn't catch any episodes of this and I don't see my EP again for another week, so anyone with personal experience with this would be appreciated. I don't know what it is, it's just my best guess at the moment. Joscelyn

My uneducated guess as a layperson is yes, it's an ectopic. Guess what, everyone with or without afib has numerous ectopics every day. Your holter monitor results probably reported a number of them. We lucky folks who become " cardiac aware " notice ectopics at least some of the time instead of not being aware of them like most people. Isolated ectopics are not dangerous at all. Some ectopics are more noticeable than others depending on how early they are, or possibly if they are a PVC instead of a PAC (there is some controversy about that.) If I only noticed a couple a week, I'd be delirious with happiness :-)
