Guest guest
Martha, JRI gave my husband his own room in a closed wing complete with him own bathroom, shower and tv. A bit run down but it was free.. Glad you are both doing well......all the best, Maya ---------- To: surfacehippy Subject: Re: money Date: Tue, Mar 4, 2003, 7:12 PM Hi Maya, Thanks for the response. My husband had a reclining chair by my bedside also, but with the nurses checking in every 30 minutes to 1 hour all night long, he wouldn't have gotten much sleep. Besides, he had just had a stint put in one of his heart vessels the week before my hip surgery and he wasn't feeling all that strong. It was a bad time for both of us, but we are glad we pulled through! Guest guest
Below is a site for Nuffield Hospitals - they are a group of 40 private (Not NHS) hospitals of which 10 offer the availability of hip resurfacing. The surgeons include the most well known - Treacy & McMinn. They offer fixed price packages which this site explains http://www.nuffieldhospitals.org.uk/ Everything is included - I understand prices start at under $12000 for everything other than hotels & flight. Also For Treacy or McMinn you can add a few thousand but there are plenty of very experirnced OS's besides.

Guest guest
Hi - I have emailed with you before - and thanks for your past, present and future willingness to share info! I too live in Oregon and partly because of proximity and partly because you have raved so about Dr. Boyd, I have to seriously consider the pros, cons and $ of Dr. Boyd vs. Dr. DeSmet. In reading these missives, I do have one question, though - why haven' t any others written about Dr. Boyd? One reads the praises of Koen DeSmet, Dr. Gross, Dr. Mont, Dr. Kennedy, Amstutz, Schmalzried, etc. and I just wonder why no one else has written about Dr. Boyd. And ideas? Or any other leads for testimonies? Actually, yours is so strong and despite the outlay of $ (which appears will be present with whomever I choose due to insurance - although Dr. Boyd is part of my " plan " I am somehow hoping against hope that in the final appeal someone will realize " investigative " status in only temporary), the relative ease of not having to travel too far is appealing. And I must remember that every doc chosen to participate in these trials must have jumped through major hoops. RIght? Thanks. Guest guest
Hey Michele, Just been lurking lately since my 10/10/02 left C+ by Dr. Boyd. I'm doing incredibly well- walked many 18 hole rounds of golf, played a little basketball & have virtually no pain except when I really overdo it which for me might be 36 holes of golf & mowing the lawn in the same day. Saw Dr. Boyd 2 weeks ago for my 6 month check-up (actually about 6 weeks early) & he was very happy with my ROM, mobility & the x-rays of my new hip. He is a very down to earth & caring man and becoming quite experienced with the C+- I was number 100 & he said he was up to about 140 (can't remember the exact number). His staff was able to convince my insurance to pay though I was still responsible for about $7000 after deductibles & " Usual & Customary " which to me was worth staying in the same state & going home after 3 days in the hospital. If you can get your insurance to pay or can afford Dr. Boyd, I would highly recommend him. , 40 Bandon, OR L C+ 10/10/02 Dr. Boyd > Hi - > I have emailed with you before - and thanks for your past, present and future willingness to share info! Guest guest
Thank you SO much for your reply about Dr. Boyd. I really do appreciate it. Maybe his office will get my insurance - OEA - to wake up. I REALLY hope so. How is wallking on the beach? Theoretically, would you be able to walk from say, the Inn at Face Rock to downtown Bandon? Easily? With difficulty? And at what point after October - if you remember. Thanks. Michele p.s. I love Bandon by the way. Guest guest
Michele, Walking 18 holes of golf is about 5 to 7 miles (depending on how straight you hit the ball!) and I think I walked my first 18 about Thanksgiving which would have been 6 weeks out. I could easily walk from Face Rock to downtown & back again, in fact I feel I could walk all day with no problem. Good Luck, > Thank you SO much for your reply about Dr. Boyd. You see Amstutz mentioned often because he is the pioneer in this country, and L.A. is a big, well known city. In my opinion, Dr. Mont is mentioned so often because there are a lot (WAY!!!!) more people back there than here, thus that much larger a pool of patients. I ring in a community bell choir, and we do mailing for cruises. The mailing for OR may be 500, but the mailings for back east can be several hundred for one large city, more than our entire state! Geez, a lot of them back there still think we get around in covered wagons ;-). Carder who used to post here had his done by Dr. Boyd, Al Raitt drove up from Chico CA to have his done, Ann Testroet who no longer posts here had both done by him, and several others that I can't think of at the moment. >Actually, yours is so strong and despite the outlay of $ (which appears >will be present with whomever I choose due to insurance - although Dr. >Boyd is part of my " plan " I am somehow hoping against hope that in the >final appeal someone will realize " investigative " status in only temporary), You may go right through without a hitch. We may be getting a prejudiced view on this site. I'm sure there are many who have never seen surfacehippy and got their approval first round. Mine got paid without too much trouble, so don't go all doom and gloom until it happens. He is in your plan, which is good--hopefully all will go through smoothly. >And I must remember that every doc chosen to participate in these trials >must have jumped through major hoops. RIght? Dr. Boyd trained with Dr. Amstutz at UCLA for many years before moving up here. He actually went to UCI med school (I used to live in Irvine--both my brothers went there and my mom used to work there--small world!), and worked with Dr. Amstutz long before coming up here. They have maintained their mentoring (I don't know what else to call it) relationship, and both speak very highly of the other. The companies doing the trials are going to choose the best they can to install their product. They don't want a bad outcome because of a bad surgeon. Guest guest
Great email, . Thank you. You see Amstutz mentioned often because he is the pioneer in this country, and L.A. is a big, well known city. In my opinion, Dr. Mont is mentioned so often because there are a lot (WAY!!!!) more people back there than here, thus that much larger a pool of patients.
