I'm sorry you're having a bad day. Sometimes it seems like if it isn't one

thing, it's another - and sometimes it seems like it's many things at once.

One of the first clues I always notice when my son is having problems

hearing is he gets grouchy. At least they caught the ear infection and are

treating it (they are, aren't they?) so things should begin getting better

in a few days. Hang in there. We all know what it's like and feel for you.

Hi Jill.

If it helps, I can imagine exactly what you're going through. My

daughter (almost 4) also gets infections only in her aided ear

and not in her profound, unaided ear. It is frustrating for her and

me, and sometimes makes it impossible for her to wear her aid

at all, much less get much benefit from it. When she can't hear,

her better behavior goes right out the window.

I'm curious, does Cassidy have tubes in her ears? Terra does,

and I was recently upset to realize (after a particularly nasty,

draining infection) that PE tubes can be contraindicated for

hearing aid users because the earmold can introduce bacteria

to the ear canal, and then conveniently (for the bacteria anyway)

create a warm, most environment for it to breed. Neither the ENT

nor the audiologist nor the pediatrician seemed to have a clue

about this, or else they just never mentioned it. Now I just want

the tubes out, but then I'm afraid she'll build up fluid again and

not be able to hear even with her aid. (This has happened

before.) Has anyone out there met a doctor who is

knowledgeable about this kind of thing and gave you any

warning before putting tubes in your kids' ears? I know they can

be a godsend for losses caused primarily by fluid buildup, but

what a Catch 22.

Anyway, I hope Cassidy is feeling better and that you haven't had

to deal with any other complications. The good news is, most

kids eventually outgrow ear infections. We all just wish it would

happen sooner!

Jill,

Sorry to hear you're having a hard time. I hope Cassidy gets better soon. We all

have bad days, in fact I'm having a bad month at the moment! This group is so

good for venting and helping you to feel not so alone when times are tough.

Take care and keep smiling :-)

When Miles was younger, we went through 4 sets of tubes. This was during the

time he wore aids. He would insist on wearing his aids even when his ears were

draining like crazy. (We would just take them out and use the blower thingie in

the tubing.) A couple of times, he got an infection on the outside of the

eardrum. What we did for this was use the medicated drops that you get for pink

eye in his ear until after the ear stopped draining. We had several of the

bottles around the house and would just use the drops as soon as an ear

infection was noted along with the oral antibiotics.

Miles was never a complainer regarding his ear infections. Maybe they didn't

hurt so much as ooze. Often the only way we would know that something was up was

that his ear molds would start to whistle even though they were fairly new.

One Christmas vacation, just after his CI surgery, Miles got an infection in one

ear 4 days we were to travel to my mother's. Then a week later, when we were at

my mother's he got an infection in the other ear. Both these times he was crabby

and feverish. Not a fun way to spend Christams vacation. I am so glad that he

seems to be free of those pesky ear infections. We have not had any trouble

recently, knock on wood.

Not sure who this is to but that is right. 900 cals is not enough! Do

you want to just lose weight or do you want to lose it the right way

and keep it off? Everybody and I mean EVERYBODY needs a minimum of 1200

cals a day. If you don't eat enough, your body goes into defense mode

and you will actually make it harder to lose weight because you will

kill your metabolism. Also, you will lose muscle and that also slows

your metabolism and makes it harder to lose weight the next time and

there will be a next time if you keep doing such drastic things.

Please go back and read some old posts. I have posted several articles

that explain all of this in more depth.

Silverteardrops,

I and several others already have said this but I'm going to say it

again, hoping you will listen. That is not enough calories! You are

only setting yourself up for failure in the long run. when you don't

eat enough calories your body goes into defense mode, it starts to shut

down and the metabolism is the first to slow down. The other thing is

it will start to take from other parts of your body for energy. You

will lose muscle, not fat and that also will slow down your metabolism.

Each time you do that it is harder to lose weight the next time.

To find the right amount of calories take your goal weight times 10,

that is how many cals a day you need. So example: 150 X10 = 1500. If

you are moderately active you need to eat about 100 more. If you are

very active 200 more.

Also, it does not matter what time you eat. It's how many cals you

have. Think of it as a fat bank. As long as you are burning off more

than you eat, you are fine. It is actually good to eat several times a

day because that too raises your metabolism.

You didn't say, how tall are you? What do you weigh? Are you

exercising? Do you drink water?

Hi, Michele,

I understand this exactly, because when I get into a fragile state, I

am loathe(sp?) to eat or drink anything that will make my heart leap.

But you have to realize that a big trigger of afib is getting

dehydrated. And not eating or drinking can cause electrolyte

imbalances that can also make things worse, plus that will make you

feel faint, depresed, etc.

What I do to get sufficient fluid is either warm some in the

microwave or (sorry this is slightly gross) since it gets cold in the

glass if I am watching tv or something, hold it in my mouth until it

warms up and then swallow it. Worth the trouble to not feel my heart

jump after I swallow it.

You can do this with soup to get some nutrients.

I also chew everything like crazy and try to relax my throat when I

swallow. All these things help.

suggested to me when I was recently going thru a bad patch to

try and do just a little bit of the things that I feared, and I found

that each day I could do more and more and feel less anxious about

them.

We really have to fight to not let this take over our lives, but we

can win out over it.

Too funny that you should mention that because I was doing this exact

thing this morning with my apple juice. I use to have no problems

drinking a glass of ice cold water. Now I am wondering if I can make

my heart jump just from worrying about it.

Michele,

I am so sorry you are having so much of the same kind of trouble I have had.

Like you I never had a problem and could eat anything at any hour before

afib. Now I must be very careful. I have found several strategies that help.

One is experimenting with various foods to find out which ones are causing more

gas and hiccups. Now I eat a very limited diet with no fruit, sugar, salt, or

additives. Apparently it is a healthful diet because blood tests always show

my blood to be in very good shape. Also, I am careful about my posture while

eating. I have found that if I don't keep my body straight, that is, if I

slouch, I have the kind of problems you are having. At night if my stomach is

showing signs of problems, I do not lie down to sleep, but sit propped up in

bed. Often the problem passes and I can finish the night lying down. Actually

this doesn't happen very often any more since I gave up dairy products, but

about three years ago I was sitting up to sleep virtually every night. I never

eat when I am under stress because I have found that causes problems. On the

other hand, sometimes if I have not eaten for a long time, eating a small

amount and drinking a warm beverage, even just warm water, will actually help.

Finally, I take anti-gas tablets, called Simethicone. There are many different

brands of anti-gas Simethicone tablets, but I take Mylanta. The Simethicone

helps to break up the gas.

Sometimes none of the above helps, but that situation is becoming much less

common. The same lessening of symptoms has happened to my brother who is in

permanent afib. About 15 years ago before his afib was diagnosed, he, too, was

at the point where he could eat almost nothing. His stomach gave him horrible

problems, probably due to his extremely fast resting pulse of 180. Since he

started taking Digoxin and Atenolol, his stomach has grown progressively

calmer. Now he can eat and drink almost everything, so I am hoping that will be

the case with me. Remember that these problems will not necessarily last

forever. I think you do need to rule out the heart as a cause of your stomach

problems, though, as it was with my brother. If your pulse rate is not

adequately

controlled by medication, that fast pulse alone could cause stomach problems

instead of the other way around, as was the case with my brother. If your

pulse is normal, the problem could be caused by gas pressing on the lining of

your

heart, according to my primary care physician, although my doctor brother

disagrees with her. I think she is right because, like you, I have so many

times

had afib begin with the hiccupping and excessive gas. I'm sure you will be

able to solve or at least improve this problem as my brother and I have done,

but it may take some time and attention to what you are doing and eating.

Best wishes,

Michele,

Everybody's different, but when I read the words " apple juice, " my heart did

a big ka-thunk. Just reading about drinking apple juice roils my stomach, and

my brother in permanent afib has the same problem. Although he can eat and

drink almost anything now, apple juice is the one thing that stirs up stomach

trouble for him. I used to be able to drink apple juice with impunity, but the

last time I had a glass, I went into afib for about 72 hours. You might try

finding a less acidic morning drink, even if it means drinking plain warm

water: not much fun, I know, but better than afib!
