Guest guest
, I just wanted to jump in here and say that I pumped for over 9 months with Casey and the pump I used was a Medela - it was the best. It was electric, double pump - meaning you can do both at the same time. I rented mine from the hospital for $3/day. It was a $1500 machine and we couldn't afford to buy it, so renting worked out well. I just thought I would put in my .2 cents. Love & hugs, Jo-Ann Kendall Hi Kendall, Just curious... are you pumping? If so, what kind of breast pump are you using? I'm looking for suggestions! {{{HUGS}}}

Guest guest
JoAnn, Thank you for the info... that is the same thing I'm leaning towards at the moment. The hospital here rents the same pump for $40 a month. I have heard that it costs about $1500 if you were to purchase it, but I wouldn't want to do that. So, it must be a great machine! I want to start pumping in the next few weeks to start storing my milk before returning to work. So, I'm probably going to lean towards renting the hospital pump... then the next challenge is getting my pumping and storing organized. It seems like a process to get in the hang of, but one that I'm totally dedicated to. Thanks for the advice! {{{HUGS}}}
Guest guest
, I have the Medela double breast pump that costs about $300. It has always worked well for me. I have never used a hospital pump,so I don't know the difference, but mine allows you to adjust the pressure and pump on both sides. My guess is that the hospital pump gets more out faster, but at $40/month maybe you'd rather own it like mine. It's so frustrating that you can't try them out! If you want to drive to Battle Creek you can test mine! Joleen > JoAnn, > > Thank you for the info... that is the same thing I'm leaning towards at the > moment. Guest guest
Joleen, Thanks for the info! I'm just so unsure! I need one that'll get the job done quick... so I'm not spending tons of time at work pumping, but I don't wanna pay a million dollars either! I guess the way I need to think of it is that I'm probably going to nurse Emma for atleast 6-8 months and then see how it goes from there. If I start renting the pump when she's a month old, then there are approx. 7 months x's $40 which is $280 - UGH... do you see how my mind works??? Anyway, I've heard that the Medela is a great pump... it's actually the one the hospital rents, but I guess the hospitals is like industrial (lol) strength. Anyway, thank you for the advice Sweetie! {{{HUGS}}}

Guest guest
, It's worth all the effort sweetie. And I'm sure that renting is the better option. Once you get into the "hang of" the process, I'm sure it will go smoothly. The hospital pumps are stronger, so start at a low setting at first and work your way up. If you need any advice or help, let me know, after nine months of pumping, I'm definitely an expert in this field - lol. Guest guest
Since you all are discussing breat pumps, I thought I'd ask this...is it " safe " to buy a used one? I would think it is because if they rent them, it isn't like your getting a brand new one, right? There is a Medela pump-in-style in my company paper this week for $125...which seems like a pretty good price considering the prices I've seen thrown around. Am I crazy to even be considering this at this point? -AmyR

Guest guest
Amy R, I can't speak from experience yet, but in our breastfeeding course, they recommended getting your own pump or renting from hospital. When you rent, you get your own kit. So there is no possibility of problems, infections, someone else's milk being in there, etc. I would worry about buying a pump from someone you don't know, I would feel more comfy if I knew the person, or they were family. Just me though. I know I am going to be breastfeeding, and I want to pump, so we are going to buy the electric double pump from MEdela, it is about $175 here. But I figured that to rent it would be more. It is a one time fee of $50 for kit, and then $45 a month, and I am planning on feeding or pumping for a year. I figured I would wait to get it until I am ready to start with pumping. Then I will have it for a second baby. Guest guest
Kim, The fact that the pump was from some unknown source is what made me hesitate in the first place and ask you all what you thought of used pumps. I really haven't done too much thinking or reading about pumps yet...just been reading the discussion over the past couple days and then today saw one in the paper and well, I had to at least ask! I supposse it will be worth the additional $100 to know that it's safe and not have to worry about it. Thanks for your thoughts! -AmyR
Guest guest
Hi. Sorry I missed out on most of this discussion but just thought I would add...there are a few places near me that let you try out breast pumps. They charge you a sterilization fee but you can spend time trying out each pump..seems worth it to me. I personally bought the advent hand pump because I don't forsee being away for long periods of time but I am aware that pump might not work for me so I am keeping an open mind! Let us know what works out for you . 37 Weeks - In PregnancyBabiesAfterEctopic@y..., JBCRobins@a... wrote: > , > > I have the Medela double breast pump that costs about $300. Guest guest
Well, after much deliberating... I think I've decided to purchase the Medela Pump in Style breastpump. I talked to the lactation consultant at the hospital and she told me it's a hospital grade pump that does the same amount of autocycling (or something like that) that the hospital ones do. So, I figured this is definitely the cheaper route. Renting from the hospital cost $50 a month and I plan on nursing for at least 6-8 months. I'll let everyone know how I make out... I'm going to need to start pumping in the next few weeks to start storing enough for when I start back to work Thanks for all who responded with advice! {{{HUGS}}}
