Guest guest
Lydia, welcome to the group! So glad you're here; there are others here you already know as well! And thanks for writing more about this -- almost makes me wish Ben had an implant! Stefanie

Guest guest
> we have purchased an Otter Box > to use instead. How interesting this had come up. Today JD left this morning for his first day of camp (as an employee, he's a Counselor In Training for the local Lions Camp for the Deaf, HOH, and CODAs) and not wanting to trust any of the bag type things to protect his implant and hearing aid, I got him an Otter Box. I hadn't ever got around to testing it out, so it's great to know someone else here has. Thanks!!! Here is a link to them: http://www.otterbox.com We got the Otterbox 1000 for $10.45. His hearing aid and BTE Speech Porcessor will both fit in the box nicely - along with some dry capsules. Hugs to all, -Kay

Guest guest
> What issues have you encountered camping with > d/hoh kids? It just occurred to me that I forgot to answer the original question. Sorry. We went camping quite a bit till this last year (with our medieval group) and there weren't that many accommodations we had to make for JD. When the group was around the campfire at night, he could use the light from the fire for any speech-reading he may need to do. Our tent had a little bag that hung down above his head so at night he would put his hearing aid/implant container in there with his dry capsules in it and his extra batteries. He also had one of those book reading lights. A note of caution about those - the cheap ones break really easily and don't work worth a darn. He now has one we got from Border books and it's been pretty darned good. It has a nice strong clip on it, the light is pretty bright, it comes in cool colors, and he's had it over a year now and it still works. He could clip that on the pocket and if he needed a light at night - there it was. Of course I also had a bunch of spare batteries for everything in my pack as well. The first time we let him go off by himself, we bought one of those mini-walkie talkie things from target. I picked a brand that had a jack for a listening earpiece and it works for him with his implant plugged into it. That way we could check on him once in a while. Other than that, there isn't really anything else we did for him because of his hearing loss. Hugs, Kay
Guest guest
> Has it been used with the Clarion or just the Nucleus? Sorry -- I just realized that one of the original contributors to this thread has a child with a Clarion. As far as I know the waterproofing has only been done with the Nucleus Sprint body worn processor. One could certainly still place the body-worn Clarion processor inside the same " Connected Electronics " Aquapac bag used for the Nucleus. However, in the case of the Nucleus, the moisture- sensitive ear-level mic may be removed from the circuit, using the apparently-waterproof lapel microphone instead. It would be trickier to waterproof the Clarion microphone because the coil+microphone are one unit. I wonder if you could put the Clarion headpiece inside a balloon tied very securely around the protruding cable with dental floss or some kind of tape... (There was a report a while back on another list where one mom put her son's Med-El BTE in a balloon for use in a wading pool and he still seemed able to hear.) I used tape to wrap the bottom around the cable. I am not brave enough to try the waterproof gear since a wet processor voids the warranty and ESCO. Our audi even told us that if it gets soaked that IT IS LOST, GOT IT....hahaha Elaine
