Hi everyone

's operation went well this morning. I couldn't get to the hospital

before J went to surgery because Elly's nursery doesn't open until 8.00. The

surgeon who glibly said when we saw him a couple of weeks ago that J's

facial nerve was in the right place according to the MRI and that the op

would only take 2-2 1/2 hours, apparently this morning seemed to have taken

on board our concerns about its position and also revised his timing of the

operation (wonder [cynically] if he went off to check what we were going on

about since although he is the CI specialist surgeon at Great Ormond Street

he has only implanted 1 child with CHARGE before and that recently).

When he came to see us after the operation and before had come round

he confirmed that the cochlear was deformed, there was bone where it

shouldn't have been and her facial nerve was nowhere near where it should

have been (thinks told you so). However he was very pleased with the outcome

in that the CI was fully inserted, no problems with the facial nerve and

they can get good responses to 14 of the 22 electrodes (the ones he couldn't

get a response from were the deeper ones).

is of course up and about, riding a toy car up and down the ward and

eating for England. She hasn't touched the head bandage, perhaps because she

has been wearing some of Flo's head scarves and bands recently - dressing up

play rather than any conscious effort on Flo's part. However she nearly had

the i/v line out of her arm before anybody could respond (in arm because

could not get in hand).

She should be out tomorrow afternoon or Sunday morning.

Will post a story of hospital arrogance that is sure to annoy a few people

on this list later but off to do more important things such as watch my

football team (that's soccer to you guys across the water!) on telly

tonight.

Simon
