Guest guest
Lesley, You can let the air or excess fluid out with a regular button as well. We just attach Dylan's feeding syringe and extension and then just open the clamp - if he is retching, this allows him to " vomit " through the tube. I don't worry about how much, because his body tells me. If he crys and pulls my hands to his button, then I do the same thing and he " burps " through his tube. Some children require frequent venting where they use the special tube to keep it vented more often. I am sorry to say that hospital nursing is far different than living with your child at home - you don't always learn the tricks for everyday function that would help families out. Guest guest
You are not alone. I did not find the doctors very helpful in explaining how to do this or demonstrating it. We learned more about how and when to vent from another parent in our Parent-2-Parent group! When we had asked our pediatrician (who is very competent) about how you knew when to do it--he just said " we would know " based on how Evan was looking and acting! Guest guest
, I vent Makenna before every feeding. When she was an infant I was told to vent her before and an hour after every feeding. She only has one port in her mickey button and we just connect the tubing and allow air to come up before we feed her. Sometimes we lay her down and sit her up to contract the tummy or rub her belly, this helps the burps come up. We were told never to discard any of her fluids that come up because it could have nutrients in it and throw her electrolytes off. We let the air come up and let any liquid go back down (unless she has a sour stomach and is retching then we discard that). HOpe this helps. Ask for more clarification if you need it. mom to Makenna > > > > Hi all > > > > I have seen this word on the listserv and associated it with > annoyed > > or venting your views, which where i come from that is how this > word > > is used. so never paid attention to this word.....ooooppps > > > > however, today we went to radiology to have a new gj tube fitted > as > > the last one was the wrong size and she also has billious fluid > > coming from her stoma hole in her stomach ( mickey button in > stomach > > and on xray is passed to the jejunum as a temp measure for the > > reflux) > > > > today i said she is retching a lot and needs to bring stuff up > > usually frothy mucous , and the radiographer said you can vent her > > there is a different type of mic-key button, with two ports, and i > > should draw back some of the stomach juices to ease with build up > > etc.... > > > > I didnt have a clue i could do this...although i cant with the > > button i have its not got the two ports, but i asked could this be > > mentioned at the meeting i am waiting for....she should have one > if > > it will help her. so hopefully they will order one after the group > > meeting. > > > > question.......why if it would help has none of the doctors etc > told > > me about it or fitted it before now given all her reflux and > chronic > > lung disease through the aspirations and frequent pneumonias!!! > > > > i sometimes feel frustrated that if i dont search things out they > > dont get mentioned.... > > > > DOES ANY ONE VENT THEIR CHILDREN > > DOES IT HELP > > HOW DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH TO TAKE OUT > > > > THANKS LES xx > > >

Guest guest
I vent Kennedy only when she asks for " the cup " . She gets a little gaggy the odd time after a feeding and she'll say " I need the cup, get the cup " . I just open up her feeding tube and let it drain down into a cup, every so often I say " are you okay now? " - she'll either say " not done yet " or " okay " and then she's off to whatever it was she was doing, as good as new! Before she could speak, etc, I looked for signs (gagging, +++ mucous coming out mouth post feeding, etc) and would just do it for a bit until the symptoms stopped. > -- > Weir > kawfolks@... > http://ca.geocities.com/weirfamilyrogers
