Hi, -

I don't think I've ever heard about pineapple being banned, but every once in a

while, someone mentions that the LID given to them disallows bananas, but none

of us have been able to come up with an

explanation.

A while back, I contacted Dole and received this information:

" According to our nutritionist, there is no reason to avoid bananas while on

a low iodine diet related to thyroid cancer treatment. Bananas contain very

little iodine (2 mcg per medium banana) and selenium (which can compete

with iodine for uptake by the thyroid gland), nor do bananas contain any

other minerals or substances that may affect the thyroid gland. "

OTOH, Chiquita wrote to me that " bananas do not contain Iodine " , so go figure.

I do know that lots of us eat bananas (and pineapple) on the LID, and have

excellent uptake.

Of course, I am passing this on for your own information.

I am not necessarily recommending either fruit for an LID; that's a decision

you'll have to make on your own.

However, if you can possibly get some explanation from your endo about these, it

would be very helpful to all of us (I'm betting you won't get one ;-)

good luck -
