Ed,

Yes, the drop in energy could be caused by the Sotalol because it is, as my

cardiologist explained it, basically a beta blocker but with special

electrophysiological properties. Beta blockers do tend to make people feel

fatigued

especially right after starting them. I remember when I started Atenolol and

whenever the dose was raised, I felt extremely fatigued for about two months

after. If the Sotalol controls your afib, it probably is worth staying with it

and hoping the fatigue will disappear after a while. However, if you are still

having afib along with the Sotalol, I would ask for a reevaluation of that

med. I am wondering why your doctor chose Sotalol as a first medication. Did

you have extreme symptoms such as dizziness, shortness of breath, or chest pain

which required strong control? If not, perhaps just an ordinary beta blocker

and/or calcium channel blocker might control the symptoms. I have done well

on Atenolol, a beta blocker that did not prevent afib before I gave up dairy

but which did and does control symptoms so that I barely know when I am in afib.

I am certainly not qualified to judge from afar the validity of prescribing

Sotalol for you, but I think you should definitely discuss with your doctor

the reasons for this drug if it doesn't keep you out of afib. There are other

drugs, such as Flecainide and Dofetilide which seem to have a better track

record for keeping people out of afib. If it's just symptom (rate) control you

want, an ordinary beta blocker and/or calcium channel blocker might work well as

they do for me.

Hi ED, When I started the Sotalol my energy level was very sluggish. It

took about a month or so for my body to get use to it and now IM fine (4

months).

IM on 80 mg x 2 a day. Your on twice the dose I see. Are you taking 320

once a day or 160 x 2? Also was that the starting dose for you? I wonder if

your Doctor can lower the dose? Is it keeping you in a NSR (normal sinus

rhythm) at that dose?

a In Massachusetts 49 NSR Sotalol 80 x 2 Warfarin 5 mg alternate with 7

1/2 mg
