I think i posted too soon. As I've been checking the web, there are loads of ASL

cert. programs-maybe the state of PA is just a bit behind!

Hi all-

I am the interloper who has gained so much by being a part of the listserv.

Different states have different standards for teachers who are qualified to

teach deaf education using manual sign or ASL. I am affiliated with Texas Tech

University College of Education preservice teaching of Deaf Hard of Hearing

Teacher program as well as the Deafblind program. We have a totally online

program to prepare masters level teachers to become certified to teach students

who are deaf also deafblind.

Before the No Child Left Behind and the highly qualified standard for teachers

theres was a huge shortage across the nation for qualified teachers of deaf

students AND qualified interpreters AND intevenors and the list went on and on.

Now, that all teachers must be trained in a core subject such as math, science,

reading, or social studies the shortage is even greater.

A little know fact, In Texas there are 7 recognized different manual sign

communication methods that are used in various communities with ASL being the

3rd down on the list. TTU/COE Deaf Hard of Hearing program requires students to

demonstrate mastery of the manual sign used in the community/school district.

Have a super day,

Ok, so I thought I could be more helpful than I am in actuality!!! Most places

have training programs as the woman from Texas suggested (usually based in

Univ.; ours, for example, are " hosted " by NorthEastern Univ, Northern Essex

Community College, and BU). I can't find yours!!! BUT....if you call (and you

may have already done this) your local Deaf Services/Interpreter Referral Bureau

they can get you what you need. Those agencies hire only certified

interpreters so they will know the connection to the training programs and you

can get the rest.

So...hope this is somewhat helpful!!!
