Ellen,

I am in CT again because my sister in law just delivered a beautiful little baby

boy! I read your message. You go get them girl. There's nothing in 's way

with you there showing everyone the truth.

Hopefully Patty's been out so long now that the players have changed. May CT be

better for you.

It's all about funding and administration. We can help with the funding bit in

that parents can write letters, lobby, etc. But the administration is another

thing. Our last two governors were ones who cut everything for the disabled and

then some with Roland being the worse. Thank goodness there is truth in " you

reap what you sew. " How's the new governor? I am praying she is one who has

vision and hope. More than that I am praying she has empathy and understanding.

Apparently CT isn't that bad anymore. I have heard they are bringing suit

against " No Child Left Behind. " Oh I do hope this gossip is true!

Say hi to for us. One day he will become the governor and make things

right!

Bonnie,

I know you do EXACTLY what is needed to do for Patty....That is the problem

with the powers that be...You are confident and correct...It is scary for them

to accept that you an " mom " has such clear vision .... I now have the reputation

as being like " a dog with a bone " ...just wont let stuff go.... TOO BAD...I did

not start this to make friends. is in a position for all to go down the

cr*pper...The powers that be are thinking that can be in a class of

27-30...I have a test that says 8...I gave the director tons of articles and

other fact sheets to back my request...She asked why am I giving this...I told

her I am trying to do this the nicest way possible...However this is the

information I will go to mediation with and I will prevail. If she chooses not

to read this and insists on going forward I will go to mediation. The law is

clear now that any change in program..(. is in a class of 15) (Changing

class size qualifies as a change in program) and we

disagree and the case goes to mediation( which I will do) the side requesting

the change needs to prove their side. She now knows ahead of time where I am

willing to take this...I did this in the privacy of her office...I did not

humiliate her nor was I disrespectful...I simply explained that will not be

causality of this budget.

If we don't step up a cause a raucous....our children get left behind...And if

the director cannot respect that then they need to find a new job....I was happy

to inform most that the job of a special education director is NOT a mandated

position...The law merely states that an administrator can facilitate the

meeting and make the decision...each building principal could do that job...they

attend the PPT anyway..

I have a reputation ...I have never ever gone into a meeting with a ridiculous

request ...each and every request is backed up in fact...I am known for being

exact...Not easily pushed around...I am not intimidated....Our old director

tried...she threatened to call DCF...I told her to do what her conscience told

her to do but to keep in mind that I am familiar with DCF....I sat on many focus

groups for identifying abuse and children with disabilities...I know that making

a false statement can cause you to lose your job and be fined.and even possible

jail time...

I contacted the commissioner and informed her of this latest tactic...Needless

to say....a refresher course was given and I was not reported to DCF...

I give people one opportunity to do the right thing...then I go above their

heads...They can never say " I had no idea " ...

Bonnie if nothing else I have learned from you the importance of being

empowered. We as parent can change this world...we just need to take the

opportunity.

So,Bonnie shame on them for spewing gossip....But know you made enough of an

impression to keep them talking....And know that We all like you a respect you.

Bonnie,

Congrats on the new addition!!!!

The rumors are true that Blumenthal is suing the feds over NCLB. However the

NAACP has just jumped on the bandwagon opposing this motion... It is true the

even though this is grossly underfunded there is irrefutable data coming from

NCLB.

I'm not sure if you got the call to action about the Kennedy/Kerry bill...I

have already sent letters to Dodd, Leiberman and DeLauro....I am fairly sure I

go this info from here. If not I will post it so we in each state can address

the deaf/blind funding. I invited each legislator to meet to fully

understand why funding deaf/blind support is crucial...

I forgot to mention the down side of disabilities and family. A month before

was born my sister in law gave birth to my nephew...he had respiratory

issues and was sent to Yale NICU...he only stayed a week but was an at risk

baby...he needed a lot of attention.. Soon would be in that same

NICU...with the same nurses...each loving as much as they loved

Willy...'s primary nurse requested because she took care of

Willy...Believe it or not that made my sister in law mad. She could not believe

I had the nerve to " steal " Willy's nurse...I had not the energy to deal with

her so I let it go...When came home she refused to visit...She never held

.. She claimed " stole " Willy's spot light... Well I mentioned to my

brother that perhaps she was having some issues and he went ballistic...Who did

I think I was...Well when I received the Award for " Women Making A Difference "

here in CT...She was furious...How dare they reward me for being a

single parent... Well I guess that is the root of the issue...She told many

other family members that I caused 's disability with my wicked ways..She is

really unreasonable...She even divided our family...My sister even started to

believe the venom Lynn was spewing.. I simply said to my sister that she could

do what she wished and I would never ask her to choose between family as Lynn

was asking..well 4 years later Andy and Lynn do not speak to my parents,

and I ..It is breaking my parents heart because Lynn asked them to choose

between grandchildren...If they insisted on loving they would not see their

children...I believe my sister in law is ill and can only hope that she gets the

help she needs. Andy and Lynn are missing out on knowing their nephew. But as

I said I cannot fuss over this needs me to be there for him.

Families you can't choose them.

Let me know if you got the info about the Kennedy/Kerry Bill on this list serv

Ellen,

Yes, I did get it and have sent it out. Thanks to Betsy.

Dodd and Leiberman are great. DeLauro is ok face to face but it appears that

the second she walks away so do her thoughts about your topic. A true

politician. She makes the person feel great when they are with her. But that's

about it. It's getting politicians to do something that is the trick. The only

way they really do anything is if there are numbers of people making them act.

Sad, but true.

Sorry to hear about the family struggles. Have you ever read Dantes Inferno?

People make their own hell sometimes.

I went to see baby Jack today. Yes, we were at Yale. I have to admit it

brought me a touch of sadness. It was as though I couldn't breathe until I saw

that he was fine. I don't know if I will ever get over the fear of the " what

ifs. "

He's absolutely beautiful though. Just perfect! Oh the feelings.

Keep this in mind as you communicate with your legislators and policymakers.

When seeing them in person, give them a " can do " -- something specific they

can do to meet your request. For example, support a bill, vote " no " on a

bill, co-sponsor a bill, etc. Try to get a commitment from them: " Can I

count on your 'yes' vote, then? " or whatever.

You know, in my experience, numbers of people asking for change or

whatever hasn't been the key. Rather for us it's been stepping out the

door (literally) to talk with candidates, attending a few teas, and not

hesitating to let them know when important meetings were to be held

(reauthorization of I.D.E.A. and public comments, etc.). Andy and I have

not gone to the capital to ask for help, though others have. Instead, we've

stayed in touch quite locally, had signs put on our lawn, given a few bucks

in contribution --- but mostly just had lots of good conversations over the

years. It's been a good investment in time. Just my experience. Martha

Martha-

What a wonderful testament to the thought that we all just have to do

something. It doesn't matter what it is. Sometimes we can do big things.

Sometimes we can do small things. But we just have to do something.

Developing a face-to-face relationship with " the powers that be " is really

important. It doesn't have to be a big deal. But it's powerful for them to

have a face to go with an issue. When any disability legislation comes

across their desks, you want them to have a real person in mind that their

decision will impact. Taking the first step to get out there and meet them

can be hard. But once you get out and do it, it gets easier.

Giving a campaign contribution is a sure way to help them remember who you

are. And it doesn't have to be a large amount of money. Putting a sign in

the yard is another good way to be remembered.

For those of us who have computers, we can include a photo on all

correspondence so our faces (and/or our kids') are always connected with our

names and our issues.

Bonnie,

You forgot the other way to make them (politicians) do something for you: $

They keep a close eye on who makes the largest campaings contributions.

Dodd and Leiberman are great. DeLauro is ok face to face but it appears that

the second she walks away so do her thoughts about your topic. A true

politician. She makes the person feel great when they are with her. But that's

about it. It's getting politicians to do something that is the trick. The only

It also helps to ask them if there is anything you can do for them. Or, along

the lines of my last post (and it's not too close to election time), give them a

check!

What a wonderful testament to the thought that we all just have to do
