This sounds a little strange to me too.

Most of us manage just fine, even if we follow the " drink lots " directions.

I've had to give sub-cutaneous fluids to my dog, because you can't tell a

dog to " drink lots " , but I've never had to have a fluids-iv when I was

awake!

Are they afraid you won't drink, that they have to force it in?

Or is it perhaps a hospital policy that ALL inpatients have iv's " just in

case " they need to give you medication on an emergency basis? (Most

inpatients are " in " because they actually do or might need real medical

attention, not because they need to be isolated to protect others!)

I would definitely question the need and rationale for this, and check just

exactly what they are putting in you, too! (plus, it adds to the bill). And

if you're really unhappy about it at the time, well, people have been known

to just TAKE OUT THEIR OWN IV NEEDLES!!! (I was going to do this after

surgery, when the dextrose was making my blood glucose too high and I could

drink on my own anyway, but I managed to get it removed " officially " before

I had to resort to such extreme measures.)
