Hi my names is Fiona, and I have a son Keelan who is nearly five and

has SMEI. He has been on the MCT Keto diet for three weeks now and

we have had to slow down the introduction of MCT oil as it was

giving him diarreheao. The question I would like to ask is that we

have Keelan's ketones up to 8 in the evening but he is still seizing

in the night, should this be happenning?, does this suggest that the

diet make not work for Keelan? fiona

Hi my son Mike (then 4) started on the MCT version of the diet and after three

weeks was sick - diarrhea or vomitting after every meal - so we changed over to

the MCT/cream mixed diet and that proved to be the right way to go for him. It

was not until we totally weaned his dilantin that we saw some positive results

in seizure control (took us 9 months) and it has taken us almost 3 yrs to get to

where we are now (which until an hour ago was seizure free over two months, but

I did a reduction again today and this evening it has all hit the fan with yet

another seizure type - so not sure yet whether I will brave this seizure wave

and keep up with the reduction or if I will put it back in the am - ugh - truely

hate this :(

Anyway, it might take a bit longer for your son's metabolism to adjust to the

change the diet makes and to accept using ketones for fuel. My son would have

good ketones at night in the beginning, then would seize during the nite and

have low ketones in the am - this eventually worked itself out.

Fiona,

If he has diarhea, he isn't diggesting the food properly. The diet isn't

totally effective when this is occurring.

Often ketones have to be 16 in the evening for the diet to work.

It is too soon to tell if the diet is going to work or not. Most people

give it at least 6 month trial.

You will have to do fine tuning to get the best results.
