Guest guest
I went with my mother to Derby Royal Infirmary for her check up with her OS on her knee. The OS Mr Wilton does not do resurfacing but one of his colleagues does. I asked him about dentistry and the use of antibiotics. He kindly took time to tell me his view which is that they should be taken. He quoted that there are mainly about 5 bacteria that live in the mouth and about 25 that live on the skin that can cause problems with a resurf/THR. He said of three dental procedures a clean up is the lowest risk and although antibiotics should be taken it is not as nearly important as drilling or the very worst case which is the treatment of an abscess. Mr Wilton stated an infection is rare and people should not unduly worry. He pointed out that the conversation was his views as all Surgeons differed. He commented that a lot of OS's in the USA didn't advise on the use of antibiotics because of side issues. His view was that antibiotics should be taken for life - not just short term - but everyone should consider the advice of their own OS. He said with a smile that the views of OS's vary as much as do Dentists on this subject - the patients Dentist may have the totally opposite opinion to their OS which is not helpful to the patient. He spoke at some length and this is just a précis of his view which I thought may be of some use.
