Bone popping question

Hi! I recently posted a question on another club foot list, and

suggested that I move on over here and ask the question. :)

Here goes: My name is Sally and I have a 20 month old named Hannah

who was born with severe bilateral club feet. She started out with

the traditional method, and we switched to the Ponseti method at 6

months. She is now only wearing the DBB at night. I've posted a few

times before, but I belong to so many lists and groups these days

that I can't keep track! LOL I hope you don't mind an inactive member

posting once in awhile. :)

Now for my question...I began to notice about a month ago that when

Hannah sits on my lap with her legs relaxed, she turns her lower leg

slightly and her bone actually " pops " in the knee area. We can hear

it and feel it. We usually try to hold her knee still so that she

can't do it, and the little stinker thinks its a game and enjoys

trying to make it pop! Apparantly its not causing her any pain, but

it does not seem natural. I wondered if it could be from her legs

being in the DBB position all night. We've noticed it in both knees,

but mostly the left. I emailed her doctor, and he didn't seem too

concerned since she's not in pain. I just wanted to hear if anyone

else has experienced anything like this? Thanks for listening!

God Bless You!

Sally in PA, mom to Hannah (20 mo., bilateral cleft palate, repaired

6/20/02, bilateral club feet), Rebekah (5), (7), and (11)

Nice to meet ya! I am a very occassional poster too so you wouldn't be alone!

I don't have this problem with my daughter but I actually have this with myself.

My knees will do this if my leg is relaxed, I'm sitting so they are bent and I

just ever so slightly move them back and forth. It doesn't hurt, just feels

weird. I also have pretty lax joints so that may be part of the reason.

I am sure others will be able to give you more insight into this.

Sincerely,

& Breanna

Hi Sally,

The " popping " sound your hearing is the same as someone " cracking "

their knuckles. It is the sound of the breaking suction in a joint.

There is a fluid inside the capsule of the joints and when the joint

is moved enough to break the suction it can make for some very

entertaining sounds. Not abnormal and not harmful if ther is no pain.

It is funny that it has become a game :) I guess if it gives you

the willies you just need to ignore her game so she recives no

response.

Good Luck~~Cast Lady

Hi Sally,

I don't have anything to add, just wanted to tell you that our daughter had

the same thing when she was younger. Both Dr. Ponseti and her ortho at the

Montreal Shriners said it was nothing abnormal.

Thanks Cast Lady! I guess I won't worry about it too much then, but I will

not give her much of an opportunity to do it! LOL
