Regarding when you should expect your child to be walking.

All children begin walking a different times. There had been a

discussion and poll taken here at the Ponseti method parents support

web site on when our children first walked and the poll results

seemed within the range ages that would be expected. The poll results

(with 24 responses) were as follows: These were the poll results as

of July 2002

Before 12 months 4 - 16.67%

12 months 5 - 20.83%

13 months 7 - 29.17

14 months 4 - 16.67

15 months 0 - 0.00%

16 months 1 - 4.17%

17 months 1 - 4.17%

18 months 0 - 0.00%

19 months 1 - 4.17%

20 months or more 1 - 4.17%

lists of typical developmental time frames at

They say that 13 to 18 months is a broad guideline of when children

should " walk alone with heels flat on the floor " .

I have posted the question like this about clubfeet children being

behind on milestones. I got alot of responses from the people on

here and they reassured me that there is no link of clubbed feet

children being behind. One lady on here her daughter walked at 9 or

10 months of age. So far my daughter is doing everything that a

normal 4 month old is doing. She actually rolled over before my

other two girls did. The wonderful people here reassured me that the

bar didn't stop their children at all. So be patient i am sure he

will start walking soon. I knew a little boy who didn't walk until

he was almost 2 years old now you can't stop him from running.

Hi,

Our daughter was a late crawler/walker and also started the Ponseti method

later. She had traditional treatment for bilateral clubfoot from birth-3

months of age, then no treatment for two months after that then at 5 months

started the Ponseti method.

In that she did not start the method until " later " , at key times that she

would have most likely started doing some of her developmental milestones,

she was still either in full leg casts or full time brace wear, so in my

opinion, I believe it did most likely delay her when it came to crawling and

walking. She started crawling at 11 months and did not walk unassisted until

she was 17 1/2 months. She could cruise around furniture and walk behind a

baby walking toy earlier than that (about 15 months old) but did not venture

out on her own until later.

I have to add though, that she became somewhat " reserved " from trying new

things after spending so much time in casts and shoes (she had a total of 16

pairs of casts between the two method's) and was quite happy to sit and

play. Once she hit the shoe stage and realized that she could move in them

much better than the casts allowed (because the casts were quite heavy on

5-7 month old) she learned to stand and walk in them and became very proud

of herself! :-)

I was very concerned once 15 months came and she was still not walking, my

oldest child walked unassisted on her first birthday, so it was very hard

not to compare. Dr. Ponseti reassured me that she was still in the normal

range and not to worry unless we hit 18 or 19 months and still she was not

walking. He said even then, some children hold out and there is no reason

why and no problems. I will tell you though, once started walking, two

weeks later (no kidding!) she could run and was very agile! There has been

no stopping her since and that once little girl that was " reserved " at

trying new things is now a 3 year old (as of next tuesday) who won't stop

for anything or anyone! She's the first one on the high slide and monkey

bars and can run and keep up with her 6 year old sister and sisters friends.

Try not to worry, Garrett will do things in his own time and will suprise

you all along the way!:-)
