Guest guest
We were just talking about this the other day! Patty could get out of any car seat that was invented. Sometimes we swore she had no bones in her body as we strapped her in and thought that there would be no way she'd be able to get out. She often did within minutes. I can remember pulling over on the highway, buckling her back in and pulling out just to look in the mirror to see her standing on the seat. The kid was a Houdini. We gave her toys, we played with her, sang songs, and did tons of things to keep her busy but she still squirmed out. What worked for us was to turn around and go home. would then take Kris where we had to go and she'd have to stay home. If she wouldn't stay in her seat then she couldn't go places. And I made sure staying home wasn't fun, fun, fun. That was tough for a while but we had to stick to it to make it work. She finally caught on. Of course there were things that we couldn't turn around for but we tried like crazy to keep the " rule " consistent. Then the little smart pants caught on and would unbuckle herself or squirm out when she had to go to the doctors or something that she didn't want to do. I hope there are others out here who can offer you information on products. It really is a frustrating and dangerous thing to deal with. My heart feels for you. Guest guest
Thanks for the reply and you were not kidding when you said it is expensive-oh my!!! Almost $1,000.00 for the appropriate size. I will keep looking into things. Re: safety in the car Try Adaptive Mall: http://www.adaptivemall.com/safetycarseats.html They have car seats up to a small adult size, and one even comes with a footrest you can add on with velcro restraints. It is pretty expensive, though. Guest guest
, We also, went through this, but now that is more stable with his meds he is less likely to cause havoc in the car. There was a period where I wouldn't drive alone because I had to keep pulling over. I could reason with him though, I told him I would be put in jail if the cops pulled us over. Maybe you can put some sort of behavior system in place for the car alone, reward at the end of the trip etc. But certainly look into any products, I can ask my OT and PT at school for you and let you know what else may be available. Do you get the Southpaw catalog? Debbie Matasker
