Guest guest
Hi to all my keto e-friends. Want to give everyone some hope. We had a terrible year with personal issues so I have not been posting but the good news is that Jen is off the diet and drug and seizure free. I can hardly believe it and will keep my fingers crossed knock on wood and all that. She did have one seizure in September when we weaned the diet quickly but I slowed it down and no seizures since that I know of. She got her period last month too and will be 14 in May. No junk food or complex carbs and SCD yogurt and she has never been healthier. We still have learning and behavior issues so the work never ends! The only side effect I see is that she is very petite. Who knows what to do about maximizing her growth naturally?
Guest guest
Hi Joan, long time no hear, glad to see that good news was good news After a period off the diet without seeing any substantial catch up growth, I would maybe ask for a bone age x-ray (of her wrist - shows whether she still has a lot of catch up in store, or whether - 'what you see is what you get' type of thing...) and perhaps a growth hormone blood test? Our endo thinks that long term keto diet ramifications can be the endocrine system going a bit haywire - less glucose over a long period meaning less insulin produced meaning less growth hormone released - something like that.... I am not sure how long they would expect this process to take to start reversing though, if it is what has happened - all theory really on growth and the diet isn't it - everyone seems to have a diff opinon... Extra protein would probably be a start, and if no joy, maybe if her blood results show she is lacking some growth hormone, some hormone treatment, but obviously as a bit of a last resort, cos like you say, maximising growth 'naturally' is always gonna be the road any of us would prefer to take. Does your dietican think there has been long enough off the diet yet where you should have started seeing more growth? PS - Always been a bit of a worry nagging me with too - like seizure control is obviously of parmamount importance, but I always thought it would be kind of easier if her were a girl, where if growth factors do end up being a problem, 'petite' isn't such a bad thing in the big scheme of things for the lassies ----- Original Message ----- > Hi to all my keto e-friends.
