Djenne,

Patty was put on Risperdal when she was in 4th grade for tics. Then we had

to dosages as she grew. She also was on Quanfacine for a while but got off that.

About two years ago she was put on Celexa for anxiety. It worked wonders and

she was like a flower blossoming again. Her hormone replacement also helps

her.

Then they started her on Strattera. After only three weeks Patty had

horrible side effects. It was horrible. She had difficulty controlling her

thoughts

and emotions and was totally depressed. It happened fast and strong. I

didn't even know who she was.

Of course we couldn't just take her off the med but had to do it slowly. The

hard part was that when she finally got off the med it took about two or three

weeks for her to come back to being her true self.

I don't know if any other children who have CHARGE have had that same

reaction to that med but it is a med that has negative reactions in " normal "

people.

It is also a med that hasn't been out there for long so we don't really know

the lifelong reactions.

After saying that I also know that all our children have different reactions

to meds. What happens to one might not happen to another.

Please understand that Patty in no way could ever live life normally without

her meds. I mean NEVER no matter what therapy or any other thing we try, and

we have tried just about everything. In reality it isn't only her meds that

help her but also counseling, relaxation techniques, understanding, and

appropriate modifications that help her. A pill doesn't just fix things but

allows

her to be able to live in this world as wonderfully as she does.

These are hard decisions we have to make. To medicate or not to medicate.

Good luck and continue to do your research first. Remember only you know

your child as well as you do. Then go from there.

Bonnie, Thanks for sharing your experiences. Our kids are so complicated

sometimes with all they have going on that it's so hard to knnow what's right.

I know he needs something to help him focus so that he can learn..he's quite a

bright boy! But we're going to take it slow to see what is best for him!

Hi ,

That's the one we were looking at but were concerned with heart side effects.

What were some of the behaviors that the meds have helped with?

Djenne,

It's funny, Kennedy asked us once about why she takes Ritalin and I told her

and she never forgot. If you ask her she will say " it helps me calm down so

I can listen and learn " . It's really cute. She was really really really

hyper before (and still is when it wears off) and just could not make

herself stop. This grounds her (without making her dopey) and enables her

to go to school, learn and basically just " fit in " socially. Hope this

helps!
