Our 15yr old son takes Respirdol with great success. He is able to focus on his

work instead of pinging the legs of his desk. If he doesn't get his way, he is

able to recover from it with out a full blown tantrum. Its not perfect yet but

at least his behavior is manageable and he is able to communicate his signing.

We tried ritalin and he totally wigged out. So did I! It was the worst for us.

Good luck! You will find what works.

OCD Meds...what works?

HI everyone,

I don't post too many questions, mainly I just read what pertains to my 8 yr old

daughter with Charge...

Anyway, we are having some OCD issues with her and have tried Zoloft 25 mg and

then upped it too 50 mg....it does not seem to be working at all, in fact, she

may even be worse.

I am just wondering if anyone out their in Chargeland has been using other meds

to control these issues. I take her back to the Dr. in 2 days and would like to

give her some feedback from my Charge friends.

THanks a bunch.

Jodie-

Just wanted to say hello. My daughter, Aubrie, is 8 also. We have an eval

with a pediatric neurodevelopmental psych to figure out her OCD, attention,

etc issues. I will be watching this conversation to see what others have to

say.

Originally, Zoloft worked well for . Then it stopped. I think the next

drug we tried was Luvox which was a horrible disaster. She's now on

Paxil (don't remember the dose right now) and has more-or-less done

superbly on it for well over a year. It is extremely frustrating to find the

right

drug and then the right dose. Hang in there. It can be done.

Note, however, that during moments/episodes of stress, ear pain, etc.,

's OCD resurfaces sometimes to a very high degree. The meds are

NOT an absolute end to the disorder. Unfortunately, it's been necessary to

stay on the Paxil even though things at times have seemed to be going

down hill. When the " problem " subsides or is medically identified, things

always even out, and we believe that is the real benefit of this drug for our

child. For us, we never experienced an evening out with Luvox. That was

just different --- but that might have been .

Jodie,

I have a 9 year old son with Charge and we do use 25 mg of zoloft

combined with Ritalin and it seems to work pretty well but we still have some

head

tapping and finger tapping. But the zoloft does help him pretty well. I'll be

interested in what you try next. Keep us posted and good luck.

We had tried Zoloft and it was a disaster for us too. was on Prozac

for over two years and although at times it did work, his moods swings and OCD

still varied a great deal. We had tried a few other things like Depakote,

but again not great results. He is currently on Risperdal and Klonopin. The

Risperdal has helped with the mood disorder, but again I do not think any one

medicine or " cocktail " of medicines will ever be perfect. The Klonopin is

for his anxiety because he can get really worked up which causes a lot of the

OCD tendencies. Unfortunately everything works differently for all our kids

(I have twin Chargers and both respond differently to the medicines) . It is

trial and error which stinks, but that is the way it goes. I also think

behavior plans and sensory diets also help. I wish I had a more clear cut

answer for you, but as you can see from the responses each child responds in

their

own way.

Good luck,
